Getting the same issue during Save. High Sierra 10.13.1 + Illustrator 22.0.1. No external drives.. Just saving on computer hard drive. Error seems very intermittent, but keeps popping up.

When adding an Asset to Export Assets panel that includes masked image - Export generates larger image extending beyond boundaries of the specified boxes. It includes masked image.
Export should CROP to masked areas! Not include them.

In preferences > General > There's an Option "Use legacy "File New" Interface. Much, much faster.
