   Well i had the same problem, when i clicked the paintbrush tool Illustrator crashed, it turned out to be my graphics card, my laptop has hybrid graphic card(Nvidia-Intel) every time i opened Illustrator Nvidia was automatically chosen as default. What i did was to right click on Illustrator and open it with intel and problem solved. I don't know why but Illustrator doesn't work well with my Nvidia graphic card.
