It is possible to do in Illustrator as well — not in Preferences, but in File > Document Setup dialog (Cmd/Ctrl + Alt +P) — because these settings are local for a document and not global. Same exact controls.

We have the fix available in the latest release. Please update Illustrator using Adobe Creative Cloud application to the latest build for version Illustrator CC 22.1.

Adobe Illustrator finally beats Macromedia Freehand... just took you about 20 years, nice job.
I don't think it would be just nice. It's about f'in time for an option like that! That's another feature where Adobe just loses hard to competitors - whom they still are not afraid of, I suppose. Otherwise nobody would need to post a request like that.
For every artist the grid in the background is totally useless and in the front it's just a big annoying distraction when you just want to see the edge of your shapes. Not even the default shortcut works in german Ai so you have to make a new one to be able to switch it on and off constantly!
Please give us a transparency control for the grid, yesterday.
