Mesh is great but would be better if you make a toggle button for "Object selection by path only" so users can toggle this feature on and off on the fly. With this option stashed in Preferences, it requires multiple steps that impair productivity.

See the screenshot. I converted this type to outlines, then Expanded Appearance, then Expanded stroke and fill. Results are superimposed over the original red/orange type. You can that the converted outline does not match the type; in general the top is pushed rightward and the bottom leftward. I tried skewing the outline to correct it but while that may nudge some curves and vertices back to where they belong, it pushes others out. The only solution I know is to tweak and/or redraw the path, which is an extremely time-consuming task. It appears that this problem arises with some but not all fonts.
