Object Layer Options
Using linked ai documents in an Illustrator file is a great way to reduce the file load on the system, and also to work collaboratively. It would be nice to be able to toggle layers in placed psd and ai files in the same way that InDesign does (accessed via import options on place, or by right-click context menu).

Is this still not doable yet? I could really use it right now!

Absolutely need this, I've just come to search for a way of toggling layers from within placed images. If InDesign has it, Illustrator should have it also. Guess the same tech behind InDesign can be added to Illustrator as they already have the code for it, but I guess it would need quite a few tweaks to get it to work.

Scenario: I have a layered .AI file that I import into InDesign for a magazine. I only want certain layers visible. I then import that layered .AI into an Illustrator file for a Poster that goes with the Magazine...again, I choose the layers visible the same way as in InDesign. Currently, Adobe, I have to save a duplicate or variant of the layered file, and try to keep the two varients in sync. Having Object Layer Options in Illustrator would solve the issue.
