Allow linked content within symbols
It would be nice to create symbols with linked content that would update when the linked content changes. Currently you have to embed anything within a symbol, images for example.

As a user, I don't always care if the content is linked or embedded. Ai could just automatically embed the content when a symbol is made.
However, linked content is better in terms of file management and workflow, and Ai has the awful habit of creating nonsense file-names when un-embedding images. -

+1 indeed!
Linked contents allow to keep the AI file size low, and keep the saving process quick.
Otherwise, embedded images can lead to dramatic file size increase, and may result in losing a lot of time every time you save the AI document. The workaround is to use the Transform Effect on a group, but it's much less flexible than symbols.
Another workaround (more flexible than the previous one, but less convenient) is the following: instead of creating a new symbol (not allowed with linked images), create a new AI document saved with PDF compatibility, and then import the whole thing as a linked content into the main document.

Hi Jeremy,
a wonderful idea. Currently I'm using symbols for mapping areas on 3D models.
Parts of the artwork are placed PDFs from InDesign. If I could place and link the PDFs and the symbols would be updated every time the linked PDF changes, yes, that would be great.FWIW: I have some issues when strokes are used in symbols that will be mapped to 3D models. The rendered shapes will change in a strange way. Not so if shapes are used where only fills are applied.
