Yeah, Wes, I remember your request about Graphic Find & Replace: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/34659661 — so sad it has so little votes. The plugin helps, but it’s not for everyone.
As for the wildcard search — I think it deserves to be a request on its own!

I'm not the original commenter -- I find the text Find & Replace tool works well enough. My only wish would be able to use wildcard characters. That was such a great option in the TexEdit (not TextEdit) word processor and I have yet to find something similar for the Mac.
But I have long wished we could get Freehand's Graphic Find & Replace tool in Illustrator. Some of that functionality is there with Global Edit and some of the selection preset. But it really should be its own tool and not buried in the properties panel
