Escape key should deselect any selected object
This would be extremely useful when you are zoomed in and a lot of objects are filled in your screen and there's no empty space around to click if you ever wanna deselect an object. Please map the escape key so that it deselects any selected object.

Yea it's too bad the ESC key cant be programmed. I have the ESC key in use in Coreldraw. If im in text mode and hit esc, it returns to picktool. If im in a shape session, rectangle, I draw then hit ESC to go back to picktool. Essentially it toggles back & forth. I have over a 100 diff shortcuts on CD and find it invaluable. The F1 key is removed being I would hit it too many times and get help issues. I tried and tried to get Illustrator to look the same but cannot. I conflict alot in illustrator due to that. But hey, life goes on. As for the filled screen, wheres your shortcut for preview (Ctrl+Y ??)
Autohotkey looks to be a nice app.
You could also get one of those slimline programmable keypads. They work pretty good.

You can go to the keyboard shortcuts and assign a hotkey to Deselect All command — but not Esc.
Escape in Ai is used to cancel the current operation, so you can’t reassign it, or they would clash.
But if you are on Windows, you can dive into Autohotkey, which cans solve this and many more other problems with hotkeys.
