Toggle Artwork Visibility Outside of Artboard
The function of the w key in InDesign switches between preview and normal view. Why doesn't Illustrator have this functionality? It would be so useful as I usually prefer to use Illustrator when I'm initially laying things out for a design project. I've seen multiple requests for this functionality in the forums. Please please please add this!
View > Trim View command does this. By default, it does not have a hotkey assigned to it, but you can map it to the one you prefer in Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts.

Josh, I agree. For some reason Trim View does not hides these, as well as hidden characters.

Thank you, Egor! Good to know it was in the view menu options and I was just oblivious of the functionality. I just mapped the shortcut as you suggested. Much appreciated : )

I am not OP but I found this doesn't exactly do what I was hoping, mainly to preview the work without the auto spell check showing (I know it can be turned off but then it's two things I have to toggle instead of one). It does hide everything else off the artboard which is nice to know about.

Illustrator does have this. View > Trim View.
By default, it does not have a hotkey assigned to it, but you can map it to the one you prefer in Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts (I use Ctrl + Alt + Shift + W, but don’t ask why :)
Does it solve this for you? Please comment back.
