Hiding the artboard (Ctrl+Shift+H) should not change the canvas color.

Now, after hiding the artboard, the canvas color changes to white.

Yes, hiding the artboard should not affect the “Match Brightness” option.

It does it only if the Canvas Color is set to Match Brightness in Preferences > User Interface... well, I mean changing it from white to white is not a problem with this.
But what do you expect? Should artboards become gray as the canvas is?
