    In my practice, I’d move each design into a separate file... and would assemble them as links onto a single canvas as scaled copies, if I ever need an assembly.

    How is this achieved? By placing each individual file onto the same canvas? (Ctrl+Shift+P)?

    Yes, hiding the artboard should not affect the “Match Brightness” option.
