Make the font selection panel less intrusive by making it editable and moveable
The font selection panel currently takes up a large portion of the center screen, making it difficult to see the font changes on a large scale. It would be nice if the panel could be editable and moveable, like other panels on Illustrator. Also, it could be positioned on the right side of the screen by default and made slightly transparent, to see through.

Dina, I thought this at first... but I think users mean to have the list of fonts they can scroll without making the dropdown pop, like a panel with a list, similar to something like Brushes, Graphics Styles, Text Styles... to make this dropdown persistent.

Currently you can pull out and reposition the character and paragraph palettes from the tool bar. How would this be different?

Yep, this one is not detachable, this is a modal dropdown.
Using a separate Character panel helps to make it pop where you need it to be. Have you tried it? -

Allow the Character Preview pane at the top of the interface to be moved so it won't cover the text under it.

Requesting a feature where fonts can be displayed as a floating panel.
And
1- Show the preview of the fonts on the right side inside "Font Selector" panel.
2- Ability to write the text inside "Font Selector" panel and display that text as a preview.
3- Following #2, Ability to drag the "custom text" + "desired font" from "Font Selector" panel to the Illustrator artboard
