At the moment Ai does not support Color Swatches to assign artboard background color, and currently exporting a PNG doesn’t support respecting the color, as well as into some other file formats — but the team intends to add these.
Please share more feedback, describe your workflows and needs. It helps to shape the feature.

Please, please, please do this. Each project has its own export needs, and it's kind of infuriating to make changes to a file, go to export, and find out that you need to re-enter all the settings. For example, we have a master iconography file that we use to manage all our brand icons, and then export them in multiple formats and sizes. Once or twice a month we have to go back into this file and add an icon, and then we need to re-enter all the settings.

Yes yes yes yes yes this. It is very unintuitive to not be able to type a width, then tab directly to the height field.
In Illustrator 2026 if I set a background color for the artboard, when I then export the artboard using Export for Screens, the background is _not_ included for raster files, but _is_ included for vector files. This makes it useless — please let us choose whether the background is exported or not.
