I know its normal behavior, but it isn't practical to do a workaround.

Gradients are rasterized when you expand the 3D effect. It says it on the dialog for the 3D effect and the dialog when you expand the object.

With the Shear Tool selected, you can Option-Click on the target, which pulls up a dialog that allows you to type in the value. You'd just make the value the opposite of positive or the opposite of negative. What we need is a way to shear objects in a non-destructive manner.
Thank you for finally updating the 3D effects tool after all these years. It still doesn't work correctly with a stroke on a Compound Path.
