There are other custom script solutions for that, which allow to position copies along custom paths. Some other methods include custom Scatter brushes, dashed lines, end even plugins, like Arranger by Omata.

Well, it feels like a job Acrobat is supposed to do, really. Adepts of PDF as a locked container, or purists who think we should not import PDFs in Illustrator in the first place, all these will argue even with this notion!

I can see the need of this though, although it’s very niche.

Please share some real cases for this feature you had in your practice, which could have benefit greatly from having inline graphics. It will help the team to plan it and make it more useful for Ai users, than analogues we have in InDesign and Figma.

This change, whatever it is, was made 2 years ago :( I wish you have reported it sooner... maybe it’d help to notice and fix it sooner... perhaps some optimization? It'd probably won’t change back, and the only option I feel is left is to tweak the shadow to have a proper look, to write down the values, and to 'fix' all existing shadows. A tedious job :(
Still I think you should share the file for the team to look at it.
Please upload it elsewhere and send the download link to sharewithai@adobe.com, and put the link to this report for tracking: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/46166314

There is a free script for Illustrator which partially solves this problem:
    https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/auto-change-text-size-to-size-of-text-box/td-p/12518793
It has some limitation and is not that great as the existing script for InDesign (https://www.id-extras.com/products/fit-text-to-frame/), but it can help to complete certain tasks. Please give it a go.

As for the request itself — sure, a great one.

Do you find it similar to this request? https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/34060360

    Hi All,

Thanks for reporting this issue. We understand your problem and investigating this issue from tolerance perspective of gradient widget on screen and slider.  We will require some specific information to investigate the other Gradient Issues, Kindly add your vote on relevant thread for below issues:

Repeated but not consistent bug: adjusting one gradient causes changes to unrelated gradients on same document. → https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/44461230-adjusting-one-gradient-causes-changes-to-unrelated

@Rasmus, a great GIF, it really shows why it matters.

First of all, the method I assumed might work for you, won’t do that :( Your circles overlap, and it means a shared fill for a group would cover strokes or go below hollow circles with overlapping strokes.

I tried to replicate it, and could not achieve the effect when the gradient is applied to the circles that are caught within the 'rectangle' you drag out with the tool. If it is consistent to you, I encourage you to share this file, here (if you are allowed to and want to do that) or privately using sharewithai@adobe.com (in this case please mention the URL for this report, https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447/suggestions/36623800)

As for the tons of separate annotators... yeah, it's garbage. Perhaps Illustrator should display these only when objects are NOT grouped? A grouping might really mark an intention to edit shared fills at once.

    It raises questions...
If some fills have the same gradients do not match their annotators’ positions with the majority? or match positions, but do not match the colors?
It suppose it then should falls back to the current way when positions or colors mismatch.

What do you think about that?

@Rasmus, actually having multiple annotators at once after applying a gradient to multiple objects at once (even if they are grouped) is the result of another user request!

If you want to have a shared fill across multiple objects, you should group them, apply a fill for the group using Appearance panel, and modify it as you wish.

If you want to leave them ungrouped... well, why?

This problem is highly illustrated with examples from this report: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/601447-illustrator-desktop-bugs/suggestions/36623800-gradient-tool-issues
That original problem is not exactly about bad UX, but the name of the report suggested broader comments, so there you have it.
You can surely upvote both, about I recommend adding votes under this newer one instead, since it’s a request and not a report, and is more specific.

Deyan, this is an expected behavior. As soon as you change the geometry of the rectangle, it stops being one, thus you get a notification. You can keep it live when using Pathfinder if you create live compound shapes, with Alt held while pressing button — this creates a composite object with all members intact, instead of creating new geometry.
But what is the task you have at hand which requires it? I could have advice something more useful if I knew the goal.
As for the corner widget you can see when using Direct Selection — make sure you have them enabled in View menu, 'Show Corner Widget'.
