Okay, I just tried the shared link and it doesn't let me see the layers, so I doubt that will help solve the problem. Is there a way to share that allows others to see the layers and alter the file?
I resent my email with a link to the file on OneDrive. I won't post that here for security reasons (I am unsure how safe that is to post publicly).

I sent an email to the email address with a link to the shared file. I can also send the ai file, if required. Here is the link:

Another point to add - I just tried opening the file in Ai browser mode and it gave me a warning. The images are created in Photoshop and exported - they are simply rectangles with a halftone applied and a gradient, exported as a png file, then added using File/Place. Nothing too fancy and not an actual smart object. I might try working with a smart object instead to see if that makes a difference.

I just had the same issue - had to force close AI (version 29.7.1 64 bit). Before I did this, I copied the layers to AI beta, which saved my changes. Previously, I noticed that Save didn't work with AI and I had to use Save As and save over the file I was working on (equal to hitting save).
I have a error message every time I open AI that I have asked about but never received a response on (different bug report). This may or may not be connected. I attached a screenshot of the error message.
After saving the AI beta file, I reopened AI 29.7.1 and the file was now able to save okay. I then turned off the Optimize save feature. Hard to know if this is a fix or just a temporary reprieve from this very annoying issue. I will work in beta for a while. Hopefully an update will fix this soon.
I use Windows 11 64 bit operating system. PC desktop.
