We have the fix available in the latest release. Please update Illustrator using Adobe Creative Cloud application to the latest build for version Illustrator CC 23.0.

Just a general status update. We are currently and will continuously improve SVG import support in Adobe Illustrator. We are currently working on solving the issues mentioned in this report. Please feel free to open new bug reports here on uservoice if you are experiencing additional/untracked issues.

Please import fill-rule="evenodd" properly. Test case of an "O" that imports incorrectly (as fill-rule="nonzero") without the hole in the middle. Illustrator gets this wrong, but XD imports it properly. Some additional issues:
1. Ref-ing the same mask crashes Illustrator.
2. Nested masks don't import properly.
3. Gradient and image transforms and patterns (fit/fill/tile) don't import<svg width="90" height="90" viewBox="0 0 90 90" version="1.1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">

This is the other direction. Go to your favorite text editor, open any SVG file, copy the contents, and then paste into Illustrator. Several design tools have a "Copy SVG Code" option that puts SVG on the clipboard, but you cannot paste that into Illustrator. Illustrator pastes the XML text which is never what you want.
