The solution to this problem is to disable the dedicated 'Show handles when multiple anchors are selected' option in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display.

Usually it is off by default and does not interfere.

However, when it’s enabled, Illustrator displays all handles for all selected art when Group Selection tool is used, and it can lead to accidental handle changes when moving the art.

If you have it disabled but still have problems — please comment back.

thanks Egor. that sorted it. i'm really not sure why this would have been changed as a default. i've been using illustrator for over 20 years and this is the first time i've had to come to the forums in tower out what's going on. this seems to serve no purpose other than to be annoying. the group selection tool is one of my most widely used tools, and this update made it useless. i couldn't click again to get the parent group, it would keep grabbing a handle. same with selecting and dragging an object.

you guys seem to be making a bunch of changes for the sake of itrecently. maybe to offer something new, but you have to realize that the vast majority or your users have many years experience on your programs and to unlearn many many years of behavior for a change that doesn't actually help at all is incredibly infuriating.
thanks goodness you've changed this back.

just changing simple things like spacing in your tool bars, the user interface, selection methods, align functions, the shape of the arrow tools etc are really things that don't need to be done and they cause more annoyance than you probably realise. please consider your users before changing things. if it doesn't make workflow considerably better, then please don't change things.
