Group Selection and Selection Tool move individual points and handles
When using the Group selection tool, I highlight an object by clicking it and then try and move it. Rather than moving the object highlighted, the tool selects a single point - grabs it - and I move that single point instead. This often leads to a crash of the application.
The solution to this problem is to disable the dedicated 'Show handles when multiple anchors are selected' option in Preferences > Selection & Anchor Display.
Usually it is off by default and does not interfere.
However, when it’s enabled, Illustrator displays all handles for all selected art when Group Selection tool is used, and it can lead to accidental handle changes when moving the art.
If you have it disabled but still have problems — please comment back.

@MPH, the 'Show handles when multiple anchors are selected' option is not new, I remember seeing it at least since CS4... and it is never enabled by default, unless a user toggles it themselves. Sadly the problem is still there...

thanks Egor. that sorted it. i'm really not sure why this would have been changed as a default. i've been using illustrator for over 20 years and this is the first time i've had to come to the forums in tower out what's going on. this seems to serve no purpose other than to be annoying. the group selection tool is one of my most widely used tools, and this update made it useless. i couldn't click again to get the parent group, it would keep grabbing a handle. same with selecting and dragging an object.

This seems to have helped with the issue!

When I try and use the group select tool, it keeps selecting individual points rather than the path or object or group. Instead of moving the entire object, just one point moves, stretching it out of shape. I then ctr-z the action and the application crashes. Not every time but once in every 20, so, a couple times a day. Absolutely infuriating.

Kevin, I know this bug, and I figured out the cause for this and the way to workaround it.
Please select only one anchor on any path, go to Control panel, and enable 'Hide handles for multiple selected anchor points'.
This effectively stops Ai from occasionally showing handles and allowing Selection and Direct Selection tools to grab them. The team is now aware of the issue, was able to reproduce it and is going to fix it. I don’t have any estimations on the time it can take though.
Thanks for the heads up!

This happens with any file. It happens with the selection tool and the Group selection tool. Even when the entire path is already selected.
It is happening with 27.0.1
All I'm doing is trying to move a group I've selected. -

After clicking on a path or object with the section tool and selecting the entire path/object, I then attempt to click and move that object and the tool selects only one of the points and drags that instead of dragging the entire path/object.
Click on path-full path selected-click to drag-only point is drug.

While zoomed out using the general selection tool, it will act as the direct selection tool and will grab an individual node rather than the entire group.
