An error occurred while saving the comment Michael commentedNick, the problem you have in seeing or understanding why we want a history panel is because you see through your own eyes and what may work well for you, but everyone is different, especially creative people, because we don't process our thoughts or ideas the same.
I'm not speaking for anyone else, but the reason why versioning is not sufficient for me is it is totally different than a history panel, I don't create a version with every action I take in a file. Could you imagine a new version every time you changed the color, added a path, erased, deleted a layer, etc, etc. We would have thousands of versions.
The reason why I personally want a history panel is often I want to quickly compared current changes I made in the design to how I had them before and the time it would waste to repeatedly hit "CMD+Shift+Z" is not a an efficient way to use my time. Could you image the time I would waste if there were 30 or 40 actions that I needed to go back to view something?
An error occurred while saving the comment Michael commentedThis feature has been being requested for years, seems like there are a bunch of blowhards in the Illustrator development team and user community that thinks everyone thinks like them and since they find no use for it, then we shouldn't
Many of like the ability to go back and forth real quickly so we can to compare the differences and see what we like better, and don't want to use the undo shortcut 20 times just to get back to a specific point. The funny thing is this feature would be easy for them to add and those that don't want it in their panels don't have to add it.

At least I know I'm not alone on this gradient issue, I have to waste so much time on removing a gradient if I want a solid!
Every year Illustrator stays the same or gets worse, while photoshop just gets easier and better to use, if only Photoshop was a vector program!
-Still no history panel in Illustrator, despite it being near the most requested feature, you gotta CMD/CTR + Z multiple times just to fix or find where you made a minor mistake.
-Still no custom naming conventions for exporting files, it adds "asset" to the exported file names.
-Can't create new files from layers or groups, gotta select everything and create a file, instead of just creating an artboard from by the file dimensions copied.
I could go on, there are so many features other Adobe programs have that would be ideal for Illustrator, but their development team doesn't seem too interested in making Illustrator a part of Creative Suite with seamless integrations, but rather just a program packaged with Creative Suite
