As someone who's been using Illustrator for nearly 40 years, I'm asking—no, pleading—that you make Illustrator accessibility compliant. Period.

We are now under strict government accessibility standards, and it’s becoming harder and harder to justify using Illustrator for projects when it can’t meet basic accessibility requirements like tagged text, reading order, alt text, etc. And before anyone hops on their high horse to tell me I should be using InDesign—don’t.

Illustrator is hands-down the best tool for designing posters, one-pagers, visual simplifiers, and other non-multi-page materials. It offers the flexibility, precision, and control we need. Not every document is a brochure or report.

We need accessibility features built into Illustrator.
We need to be able to export accessible PDFs directly from Illustrator.
We need Adobe to acknowledge that not all design lives in InDesign.
We need Illustrator files placed in InDesign to be compliant.

This is no longer just a nice-to-have—it’s essential for compliance, for inclusivity, and for continuing to use the tools we’ve built our workflows around for decades.

Use your AI capabilities to make documents accessible. No more 6 fingered hands, just stuff we need.

So now as of 9/8/2023 my workaround of copying text out of Illustrator (Mac), pasting into TextEdit, and the copying THAT into my email (Outlook) no longer works. Now even TextEdit treats it as if I pasted a screen shot. No editable text at all. Now I have to open Word, paste without formatting, copy from there, go to where I need the text and paste it. Now I have to have Word open as well...
    Thanks Adobe!

The solution is pushed into Global Availability build 28.6.

PDF is now available as type in File > Export > Export As dialog.

However, File > Adobe PDF Presets menu, similar to one InDesign has, to allow even quicker export, is absent still.

The whole edit PDF is a mess!!! As the sole designer in our department, I am in charge of all digital assets. It makes it so difficult when a co-worker makes a 'minor' change to a PDF and I don't know about it, now I have an outdated original Illustrator file.

Just set it so you Export a PDF, close the open file so you cannot inadvertently edit the PDF that is now open.

Yes I know there is a Save as Copy... option, but when you are in a fast paced environment, and you have 500 windows open, it's burdensome to look for the tiny text at the top left that says: filename.ai not filename.pdf

Enable auto closing a file you saved as an Adobe PDF file. I have had too many instances of 'fixing' an open PDF file and not the native .ai file...
