Please re-add 3D mapping with Symbols to new 3D functionality
Please re-add 3D mapping with Symbols to the new 3D functionality.
I know it's included in the "3D (Classic)" Effects menu, but it needs to be added to the new 3D functionality. Calling it "Classic" means Adobe is going to abandon it (for something worse). I use 3D mapping with Symbols ALL THE TIME. PLEASE add it back.
Thank you!
Mapping is now available in Beta. There are some known issues with it, but even more unknown ones, so the team encourages you to try it and write back about your experience with it, to help to make it better.

With the latest Illustrator update, 26.2.1, I experimented with mapping some symbols to 3D object, created by the new-3D and 3D-Classic. While the symbol mapping is now a possibility in the new-3D (THANK YOU), it's no where close to the superior functionality with the vector 3D-Classic tool.
New-3D
•Mapping symbols to cover a multi-faceted surface is easier, but then its seriously flawed (see the attached image).3D-Classic:
•Vector 3D is so far superior to raster 3D that it's a world difference.
•The 3D image can be Expanded and sectioned out. That is a must-have feature
•Wrapping a symbol object around the edges and multi-faceted object is more difficult, but with a little work it can be accomplished so much better than the New-3D raster engine.
•There is only a single very minor flaw with the vector 3D-Classic, and that's when a symbol gets close to a sphere pole it warps. But then it can be easily remedied by simply placing the symbol centrally, and rotating the sphere instead. Easy fix.PLEASE keep and improve the vector 3D functionality, PLEASE

The new mapping feature isn't as functional as the classic 3d mapping feature - see attached images and my response to Egor Chistyakov

It took me hunting down this comment thread to realize this feature has been added to the new 3D updates! But I wanna say the new update isn't as functional as the classic mapping feature, which functions a little bit more like a traditional 3d texture map in which you can map additional symbols onto specific parts of the geometry. This new mapping feature auto-scales the artwork which is just way less functional

Mark, you can try the draft way of mapping in the most recent Beta version. You can access in dedicated section of Creative Cloud Desktop. Since you were the one who specifically asked for it, I personally want you to try this first attempt, and pick it to pieces, to make it better.
