We have the fix available in the latest release. Please update Illustrator using Adobe Creative Cloud application to the latest build for version Illustrator CC 22.1.

The current workaround for completely eliminating 'Recent' section in font list is to set '0' in Preferences > Type: Number of Recent Fonts.
But since it’s stupid, please add votes to make it work properly.

It's fine, Adobe, that you offer new features, but please don't assume that you can take away features that work efficiently and have been in use for years.

It's great that Adobe tries to add new features, but please don't take away existing features that people have used for decades.
