I did through before the illustrator upgrade but now all good. I am running Illustrator 24.1. I'm not too sure how this helps anyone but thought I would mention it.

Adobe. Make It an Experience.Bradley supported this idea ·An error occurred while saving the comment Bradley commentedYep same problem here as well. Saving an ai to a folder in documents. Started happening after updating to Illustrator CC 2018 22.0.1 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.1.
It must be a combo of Illustrator and macOS Catalina. I am running Illustrator 24.1.2 but still run macOS Mojave 10.14.6 on iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017) 4.2 GHz Intel Core i7 64 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 Radeon Pro 580 8 GB and have no issues what so ever.
