The Links panel now has a Delete button in the latest Beta (28.1.0.87).
Please check and try if it works for you as expected.
You can access Beta in the Beta section of your CCD app.

It would also be nice if this feature could then be used to calculate areas and perimeters in the scale of the drawing. For instance if I draw a polygon on a map with a scale of 1:24,000 Illustrator could tell me, in scale, what the acreage and/or linear dimension of the perimeter is.

It would also be nice if the eyedropper could give me the RGB values for a transparent color, not the full value of the color - in case I want to match the transparent color with a solid color somewhere else.
I've yet to be able to get one of the work arounds to actually work. They are ponderous at best. It seems like this should be a simple thing.
