Prevent "Align paragraph" from moving the text from its position
It's by far the thing that annoys me the most about Illustrator;
when you have your point text already positioned you need it to be aligned to a side and when you press the "align" button in the paragraph options the text moves and aligns to its previous center.
It's a complete time-waster!

The way Illustrator handles this has never benefitted me. What should be a simple, one-step function always becomes two.
Change this behavior.

Moving the text when changing the alignment is ANNOYING and totally useless.
Example I just got a file with thousands of text fragments aligned on right, but with text anchor on left. When changing the alignment to right everything gets messed up. What is the use of this, except annoying the user??

I agree. There's no reason changing the alignment of point text should reposition its container.

You mean point text? If yes, than leave current behavior as it is, because now it stays snapped to grid when you change alignment, and as a snapper, I want it to stay that way. When I need text to stay, but it's point to move, I use script to do it, but I personally need it quite rare.
What I think can be done without messing with default settings everyone is familiar with through years, is to add Shift+click on alignment options in Paragraph palette to change alignment with point moving and text staying, as you probably want.
I'll make a separate request for this. -

I agree with Egor. Would love this as a preference and/or a modifier key.
I have needed both versions of this behavior. To illustrate: needing to iterate quickly, I move text around until i like where it sits, but then realize It is aligned incorrectly, which can cause "maintenance" issues down the road. Having the option to auto-reposition the anchor point of text when you change alignment would save some time and frustration.

When changing text paragraph alignment, justification, the text could just stay where it is. I don't see any benefits to the text moving in Illustrator. I would assume one has to compensate for this nuance every time paragraph alignment is changed for a type string, like, "I better record the position of this object because it's going to move."

No. Don't do this as William says — it would be the same mistake as recent 'Zoom to selection' failure was. Don't REPLACE features, IMPROVE them.
I use changing of paragraph alignment like it is now, for moving, daily.
Building proposed feature into AI — is a good idea, but DON'T replace current behaviour. Make it work with Ctrl+clicking of a button, for example.
P.S. Use 'Align Text.jsx' until it is implemented
