Make option for new artboards to track their names based on existing artboards
Create 2 artboards.
Delete second one.
Create new artboard—the name will be 'Artboard 3'.
This is very-very inconvenient most of the times.
Make it behave as Layers behave both in PS and AI!
New artboard should check the stack and increment it's name properly.

And the same happens for assets and documents’ numbers:

If this should ever be done, please make it optional – I often link single Illustrator artboards to InDesign brochures and when the artboards are re-numbered when adding some in between, all links would be messed up.

Also, a sorting not just by X, Y will be needed, but there must be some condition, if artboards are arranged as a grid. Which sequence to read for sorting: from left to right and to the next row, or from top to bottom and to the next column. Plus if two artboards are on top of each other and other non-obvious cases.

Hi,
is there any feedback on this post FROM 3 YEARS AGO, Adobe?
Would it be please, please, please, possible to have a last the OPTION to number artboards as described?
(Or get an answer after all that time) -

For many years I wish AI sorted the artboards by their position in the document but not by their time of creation. When moving artboards around for creating an presentation (which I would like to export later by maintaining the sequence I see on the canvas) it would be so much more comfortable when the numbering of the artboard would change accordingly. For example if I prepare a presentation with multiple artboards and decide to move the most right artboard of the bottom row to the very upper left position I wish this artboard would be numbered as artboard #1 and all the other artboards would change their number accordingly. Or at least I would like to have the option to switch numbering say from "Chronological" to "By Position". So top left is #1 and bottom right is the last number.
As my English is not perfect, I hope I made myself clear. Do you need an illustration to get the idea?
Thanks
