Add a slug area in document setup
In InDesign's document setup, there are Slug settings in addition to Bleed.

There is no slug area in Illustrator. As a result, users are stacking another large artboard underneath the artboard as an alternative to a slug area. This situation should be remedied by adding Slug settings.

This isn't the perfect solution, but I often add slugs/notes to Illustrator documents by adding text outside of the artboard. They don't print and yet I can access/see the information when I open the document.
I wish there was a slug feature in Illustrator!!

I wonder how this quite new request was able to gain that much upvote!
Regarding the problem, I do myself publishing in Ai, so sure, slug is needed. -

Some users are expanding a bleed area to maintain the correct artboard size. They are unavoidably doing this, knowing that it is bad know-how. Being able to set up a slug area will help them.

The only way to maintain the correct artboard size in Illustrator is to stack other artboard.
With a slug area like InDesign, there is no need to stack artboards. -

slug is also a great way to store notes and quality control info that you want travelling with the artboard when you need to 'rearrange' or cleanup artboards as well as show up in PDF creation.

As part of my daily workflow, all my art has to have a slug, when i put all the information about the file, date, time, user, CMYK and spot colors used, company logo, etc.
Editable and complete slug option will be appreciated, see attached an example of my manual slug, i use in conjunction with a plugin which puts date time, the user, etc automatically, but i don't like plugins, I want part of the Adobe illustrator Software.
See attached an example
