Pattern Tool Options
I am a surface pattern designer, so please expand the pattern options tile types to include those available in AI desktop: brick by row, brick by column, and the hex options as well.

commentedMany months (possibly a year ago). I mentioned to someone on this platform that I’m a surface pattern designer. I want desperately to use the ipad for my designs but the ability to make a repeat pattern is impossible if the artist is trying to place certain motifs in specific places. For example if a a design element (motif) is being built on a square and that element falls off the top, then it must be duplicated and repeated in the same position but off the bottom of the square. In the desktop version this is easy. You just plug in the math. + or the size of the square. Procreate makes this easier because they use a different system that doesn’t require numbers at all but procreate is raster and not vector. I need vector. Along comes affinity designer for the ipad and their system works pretty well but affinity doesn’t have an image trace function and that’s a problem. I could have a lengthy conversation and screen share the process with someone interested. But adobe seems spread a little thin these days with a web version when the ipad version doesn’t feel the least bit finished.

commentedYes! And while we're at it, please give us a way to get the art for a single repeat unit from the pattern. It takes many steps on the desktop to get a repeat tile from the fill swatch. It would be a shame to duplicate that on the iPad, leaving us without this critical function for pattern designers. The fill swatch anti-aliasing bug that reveals white lines in pattern exports is a long-standing frustration for all pattern designers. Any similar new pattern feature added to the iPad should address these issues.

Holly Clinton commented Yes, yes, yes please this would be an absolute game changer for me and other surface pattern designers. Fingers crossed you are looking to add this feature soon.

commentedThis would be absolutely amazing - affinity designer has this feature already and I’m dying for this to be part of the illustrator for iPad features - it would be incredible to create patterns on the go and not be tied to my Mac

commentedI would also prefer this tool to work like it does on the desktop. It’s fine for simple patterns but when I try and move icons within the pattern the bounding box moves and shifts the entire pattern. I can’t fill holes within the pattern. Adobe Capture just added a free form function to its pattern tool. That’s what Ai on the iPad needs.

commentedPlease add this! Surface pattern designers seeking to work on the iPad must use other apps to create repeat pattern tiles, and it would be great to have the option to use Illustrator.

commentedAgreed! This would be such an excellent feature. Currently having to use work arounds or different vector apps entirely.

Daniwillis commented It would be great to be able to offset a group of elements a specific amount using the repeat function to create a seamless repeat pattern. It works fine for single elements but for multiple elements it is a very slow process to work out the correct measurements. I have attached a file to explain a little better.

commentedI would like the transform tool to work like the Ilustrator desktop version. That would help greatly when making repeat seamless patterns.

commentedI had such high hope for this. It is what I was most exited about, not having to swap to desktop illustrator for patternmaking... so yes!
