Improved 3D effects and Adobe Substance materials
We have introduced new and improved '3D and Materials' effects in 26.0 this year. These effects have been fully rebuilt using modern rendering technology and apart from being much more stable than classic 3D effects, they also allow you to:
* Apply and edit 3D effects conveniently through a non-blocking panel with real time preview.
* Texture artwork using Adobe Substance 3D materials that are highly adjustable. Choose from built-in materials in the panel or upload your own.
* Light up artwork with environment and directional light along with shadows.
* Create smooth and curvy extrusions using the new Inflate option.
* Rotate artwork more easily using the new on-canvas controls.
* Once you've setup your 3D object, render it using Ray tracing with adjustable quality options.
There are more features we're actively working on bringing to these effects. Please share your feedback and suggestions from your experience of using these new effects.
There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:
1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086
2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:

All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.

It is more difficult to map self-generated artwork to specific surfaces. In fact, it seems impossible to get some of the mapping effects of the "classic" version. Otherwise, the new 3D features are superior to what we had before.

Please don't remove classic 3D Extrude & Bevel options. I'm using symbols to map the vectors on a 3D surface. I need vector output in Illustrator, not raster 3D renders, so please keep this feature in new updates.

@CygnusRK727, aha, makes sense. Indeed, all zeroes are 'front' :)
The team is now aware of the need. Let''s see if they can offer anything. -

@Egor Chistyakov Being able to set a default value (or reset to zeroed out axis) would work for me. Ideally it stays that value each time I open Illustrator.
I used "Front" because that is the terminology used by Illustrator for zeroed out axis. :-) see attached file

It'd be nice if you could adjust the shadow settings. Perhaps the opacity would be useful. I think the shadows are sometimes a bit too dark and harsh

Need an option for No Shading, or Preserve Spot Colors. Lighting effects cause too much discoloration.

@ThatSkySylvos, can you please provide a screenshot of these in Unreal, for the reference?
I personally think these buttons make noise. Instead, I’d use another approach, used is some other apps — a middle clicking a filed resets it to zero. Does it feel viable to you? -
@CygnusRK727, having its as 'Off-axis Front' by default solves two important UX problems:
1. It matches the behavior with the Classic 3D, making it a consistent approach
2. It immediately renders the selected object so it 'looks 3d', while Front will misguide users who try it
Still it makes sense to allow users to set their own defaults. It’s a global Illustrator’s pain —defaults values are extremely tough to setup. So yeah, I agree,
The UI you propose, however, is not OK to me :) What if a user wants Left instead? What does this checkmark even mean? Why it says 'Front'? Pretty unexplainable.
I’d better had a context menu here with commands 'Make a default value' and 'Reset to original defaults'. What do you think? -

it would be nice to add a little "reset" button next to each field that we can alter. that way it gives us more confidence to play with each setting. also we we accidentally shift the rotation of something then instead of typing in figures, we can just click little buttons at the right of each text box to reset (Like in Unreal Engine)

I'd like a check box on the 3D and Materials panel under Rotation where I can choose my default starting rotation to be Preset of front (X=0, Y=0, Z=0) See example attached. I find that every time I create a new 3D it is easier to start from the front view and use the degree sliders from there.
In essence, I would prefer the default preset rotation to be "zeroed out."

@Mike:
In the latest 27.3 build you can control the lighting on any object also you can turn off the lighting we have light visibility option. Please check and let us know if this meets your expectation. -

@Lewis Tsalis :
We already have the capability to select and adjust color of each light. Please download the latest build you will see the multiple lights feature from where you can adjust the properties of each individual light. Also as of now ambient light color is not supported.

Can we have the ability to adjust the color and values for each light? And an option to select the ambient light color. Thanks.

The evolution of this revolution brings us more flexible things. But the resolution of the symbol which for me is a photo and not vectors is very low definition. How to have the same quality as the old function?

Nothing I do with the lighting can make White actually Appear White. If I drag the intensity of any lights to 200%, all the colours are glossy and bloomed, but white still appears grey.
I'd much rather you remove lighting all together, and let my colours stay their actual colours. Changing the colours ruins the entire application of this tool.
The new Graphics tool works way better than the old "Map Art" feature, which would regularly render my face as a blank canvas eve though I've correctly applied the symbol to the correct face. The new tool works easily on first click, but the colours are always wrong.

Hi there. Regarding 3D effects update from Illustrator, I like that a lot. Reckon it is just missing an option to save the presets. At least I could not find that.

With simple 3d effect I get a message that the operation cannot be performed. This also applies to more complex operations.
Who knows a solution?
See also exampleI have Mac Studio, 32GB Ram, Apple M1 Chip and Ventura 13.2.1 OS.
The color is Adobe RGB.
Remarkable! the 3D function works on my Macbook Pro! -

I would like some help on a problem that has occurred every time I try to apply a graphic element on top of an object that I created in Adobe Illustrator.
The graphic element is not applied and turns into a jagged line. My computer is a 2013 Ima 27 with 16gb memory and 3tb hard drive. If you can help me I will be grateful. Wait your return.

Jerry, that was a private comment I made. You can reply those directly from your email client. But it’s OK to discuss it publicly.
The file behaves just fine for me, I am able to move the slider, it gets moved, the shape gets properly distorted, inputting values manually works too... So this must be something machine-specific, so thanks for the details you provided. I will let the team know.
As for the Classic’s slider — nothing to wonder about, they use completely different engines.
