Improved 3D effects and Adobe Substance materials
We have introduced new and improved '3D and Materials' effects in 26.0 this year. These effects have been fully rebuilt using modern rendering technology and apart from being much more stable than classic 3D effects, they also allow you to:
* Apply and edit 3D effects conveniently through a non-blocking panel with real time preview.
* Texture artwork using Adobe Substance 3D materials that are highly adjustable. Choose from built-in materials in the panel or upload your own.
* Light up artwork with environment and directional light along with shadows.
* Create smooth and curvy extrusions using the new Inflate option.
* Rotate artwork more easily using the new on-canvas controls.
* Once you've setup your 3D object, render it using Ray tracing with adjustable quality options.
There are more features we're actively working on bringing to these effects. Please share your feedback and suggestions from your experience of using these new effects.
There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:
1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086
2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:

All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.

Much better. Small feedback, looking to untick 'draw hidden faces'

Does not work. Error Message - An Error occurred while processing the appearance of an object... Never worked actually.

SO SLOW! And please allow there to be NO lighting FX, and allow it to expand to correct outlines, not loosey goosey wireframe.

Ilustrators new 3D functionality sucks. Please fix it asap. Its costing me time and money.

I dont understand why the new 3D functionality sucks. When I tried to increase the depth on the extrude filter, it doesn't apply what I'm trying to accomplish. Can this be fixed???

"Cannot create 3D model."
Worked after saving the .AI file.

@Nicolas Rapp: Can you please provide more information what are the issues you are facing?
Also please provide ai file, screen recording and system specification to look at this issue so that we can fix this. -

@Gabriel Drozdov : Can you please provide the ai file, this is not reproducible for us. Also does this happens with every grouped object?
Also please try clearing the preferences, please clear preferences and try again

3D is useless without the option to render as vector

Here is a screen recording of the error I get when trying to export grouped OBJs. This was not an issue in the previous version of Illustrator (26.3.1), where grouping would result in one unioned object upon export.

- Exported simple model in 3 formats
- 3 Different result when imported in Dimension... -
Christian, you can drag-drop the appearance, from one object to another using a dedicated Appearance panel. Not as fast as straightforward commands, Ctrl+C/V style, but it works anyway. What do you do instead?
Also, what other Perspective adjustments would you like to see? The basic slider is there, but I suppose it's not enough for you.

Love the new features...one suggestion I have is to add the ability to copy and paste settings between one object and another. This would make replicating looks simple. At the moment it is rather time consuming. Additionally (and a separate thought) adding some perspective adjustments would be nice as well.

Exporting to OBJ is partially broken in the new update (26.4.1). Previously, if you had multiple 3D objects in a group and exported the group, it would create a single unioned OBJ. Now, this results in an error and the export fails. Exporting a single (ungrouped) 3D object does not fail and works fine. I have tested this on two computers (Macbooks) and had the same results. I think the issue is linked to the new .mtl files that generate when exporting OBJs. Any way to export without these new materials?

Thank you for the improvement! I think it has no end to the possibilities .

@Davine Prodigy: Please provide the ai file of the issue? Also which illustrator version are you using?
Does this happens everytime on different files or this is only file specific? -
Akshay Varshney commented
@Iain Anderson : In our latest BETA release, USD/GLTF support is there in which you can export textures as well.
Please let us know if there is any feedback related to that. -

I did the EXTRUDE effect on a text font. When I tried to work the Bevel effects, that's when the software started acting funny. I found that when working with 3D, I need to resize the image before adding the 3D effect. That has seemed to help so far.

Please give the team some more context on this.
What were you doing when this happened? I see a progress bar in the background — what was it for?
