It seems like this problem happens only for Mac Sonoma users...

Downgrading to a previous version of MacOS seems to be a viable workaround at the moment.

This is not a proposed solution though.

If this happens for you at earlier versions — please comment.

Illustrator 28.3 came out today. Has any Sonaoma users updated and did it fix the problem?

You do not have to turn tool tips off. When it freezes, to unfreeze tool bar, open settings at hit OK. That will unfreeze things. You do not have to change any settings, just hit OK. I reverted back to Ventura back in January and have not had one freeze since. Its all about Sonoma.

Just wanted to update on the downgrade on a Mac Studio M1 and Macbook Air.. AMAZING difference in everything. Illustrator no longer errors/freezes etc. All works fin and holy cow, I did not realize how sluggish Sonoma was after going back to Ventura. It's like I have a new error free machine again. I'll stick with Ventura for now. For any others with issues, This is my fix.

Will finally got Sonoma removed and Ventura finished installing today. I'll see how things go and report after a couple days of use. On MacBook Air M1, cannot get it to crash/freeze after downgrading to Ventura. That's a start.

Well, illustrator 28 is pretty much useless. Every time I select no fill color, it locks the top menu. 3 fresh installs on 2 different Macs. ( M1's )

By the way, I can duplicate the crash every time I do the same sequence or close to it in the video. It seems to happen as soon as I select a "no fill" for shapes after subtracting a rough stroke from it.

Im sorry, I just saw this post AFTER I posted as well. Same issue. Here is a video of it. https://imgur.com/a/hl3dbDj

    My post:
Mac M1, ( Mac Studio and MacBook Air ) Ventura 14.2.1 Adobe Illustrator 28.1.
As you can see in the video, The main top menu crashes and is not accesable every time I select a no fill. This happens on Both of my machines. I did a fresh install on BOTH of my machines. Installed older version of illustrator 27.9.1. All works fine. Update to 28, CRASH. Clean OS install again, install Watch video to understand. Illustrator 28, CRASH. No plugins, no user data, no fonts, no other software other than what comes with MacOS. Happens on both machines. Talked with Support. They were zero help. It's a BUG with no fix if it happens on a new install of both OS and Adobe on two different machines. They said they tried to duplicate the problem but failed to. If I revert back to v27.9 it works fine. ( would not let me upload the video here, this is the best I can do, hope it works ) https://imgur.com/a/hl3dbDj

I'll see if I can delete my post.

Other programs can steel the spacebar. For me, Microsoft word does. I close Word and all is good again. Just close one program at a time and you will find the thief.
