Top Bar Menu Items Stop Responding
Platform: macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 Illustrator: 28.1
While operating and working on a drawing portions of the Title Bar Menu no longer respond to clicks (File, Edit, Object, Type, Select, Effect, View Window) however the Illustrator and Help still respond.
It was necessary to use keyboard shortcuts to save work and was necessary to quit and reload Illustrator and then load the file I was working on and the menu items now respond.
Has happened numerous times while working on recent drawings.
It seems like this problem happens only for Mac Sonoma users...
Downgrading to a previous version of MacOS seems to be a viable workaround at the moment.
This is not a proposed solution though.
If this happens for you at earlier versions — please comment.

Issue still occurs:
- When computer wakes up after battery gets on zero and recharging
- When Office apps are open, specially Word and Excel -
Hi All,
It seems this issue is no longer happening on Mac Sonoma 14.4. Kindly let us know if this is still happening for you with the latest Mac OS Sonoma 14.4.

A random points, I will make adjustments to my design. When I go to the main menu to make a selection, nothing responds. It happens at random times. I have to force quit and hope that the autosave captured the most recent version...

The menu display problem was resolved by updating to Sonoma 14.4.
So it seems that this problem was an OS issue.
Please check after updating to Sonoma 14.4. -

I think someone mentioned this in here, or one of the crash threads. This happens to me a lot, and I crash a lot. (and yup, MacOS Sonoma)... Anyway, if you just click illustrator then settings, the menu bar will work again. You don't even need to go into the settings, just click it. At least it's a work around and I'm grateful for the person that originally posted this work around.

This bug is consistent with having a Design Panel open, like Stroke Panel. This will freeze most of the drop-down options on the menu bar.
A temporary fix to this bug is hovering the Settings in the Illustrator drop-down. Which I do not understand why that drop-down works but the others within the program (File, Edit, Object, Type etc) will not.

@Dockskipper, not that I am aware of :/

Illustrator 28.3 came out today. Has any Sonaoma users updated and did it fix the problem?

You do not have to turn tool tips off. When it freezes, to unfreeze tool bar, open settings at hit OK. That will unfreeze things. You do not have to change any settings, just hit OK. I reverted back to Ventura back in January and have not had one freeze since. Its all about Sonoma.

@steban Castro, you are amazing, thank you!! I just turned it off and hoping for no more bugos here as well! :)

I've found a temporary solution:
Turn Off "Show Rich Tool tips" on Preferences > General. No bugos at the moment.

I am experiencing the same issue and it's truly infuriating when you're under the pressure of deadlines. Interestingly, I can click on "illustrator", but the rest of the menu items are completely unresponsive. You cannot access the menus via keyboard either as a workaround.
illustrator 2024 has just been a hot mess of problems to be honest

After a while of using it and saving large file, all tools menus came disabled. It is not possible to access them, just Illustrator and Help can be selected.

My menu bar at top is locked and frozen after working in Ai after awhile. Im able to save and do other things, but can't click on that Top menu bar. I have to close down Ai and then reopen it up again and then the menu bar is clickable.

This also happens to me when I'm working with Text... if I outline text (with shortcut), then go to Effect to add stylized effects...but then the menu is "frozen"... I can use other keyboard shortcuts and can save and close out to restart illustrator....but KEEPS happening while I'm working...
