My apologies for the delay getting back to you. I have attached a screenshot of Illustrator 30.8.1 on macOS 27. The issue with not seeing the units is primarily when I click or multi-click in the text field and am not sure if the units are selected. This can lead to an error depending on what I paste into the field. I normally use a UI setting one tick mark above small; however the problem exists with higher settings as well.

Your script is very interesting. I am confused by the statement on line 628, tf.textPath.insetSpacing. I do not see a text path's insetSpacing as a parameter is either JavaScript or AppleScript. I would appreciate an explanation.

While I appreciate the comments pointing out the method of fitting text frames to text via double clicking on the handles, I was asking for the ability to do the fitting via AppleScript. I would like to avoid GUI scripting to accomplish the objective. Also, to those who suggest using Type>Area Type Options>Auto Size, that only resizes vertically.

I would find it very useful to be able to select a text field and instruct Illustrator to fit the text field to the text itself both vertically and horizontally. In addition to doing that manually, have an AppleScript command to do the same.

Illustrator Beta (starting with 30.9.0.52) now offers its own approach to dynamic text.
Text auto-resizes and reflows to fit its container as we scale or reshape it. It also works with Type on a Path, so any curve we draw gets the same fit-to-space behavior.
Please try it and share what you think about it with the team in comments — the feedback we share is shaping what gets shipped.
- Select the Type tool. Click to add a line of text, drag to create a text area, or select an existing type object.
- Turn on Dynamic Text (the T with a lighting bolt button) from the Contextual Task Bar, Properties, or Control panels.
- Resize or reshape the bounding box to see the text fit itself.
- Alter the settings in the Properties panel (only there for now)

I submitted a feature request for the ability to size a text field to the contained text. The request was "merged" into this thread as a duplicate. However, the requests in the comments of this thread as well as the new Dynamic Text concern sizing the contained text to its text field. I want the opposite: leave the text alone and set the text field to the text. This will aid in placing the text via scripts.

Latest versions of Illustrator can do that.
If you have the bounding box enabled, double-click the bottom filled square handle to toggle Auto Size.
You can also do that in Area Type Options dialog.

The team made some fixes in the latest general release 30.7 to fix the problem with the sleep mode. Can you please give it a spin and comment if it helps?

Version 30.7 seems to have fixed the problem of Illustrator preventing the screen saver. It was an intermittent problem, but I have been using version 30.7 for quite a while without seeing the problem.

Egor - I sent the preference file to the email address you provided. I want to clarify my earlier post. I had written "Resetting the corrupted workspace does return it to normal, however that needs to be done each time the document is opened.” That is not correct; the workspace needs to be reset each time Illustrator is run.

Thank you for the methods of selected fields. Attached is a screenshot of my workspace. I use two displays. In the screenshot, the white line is the boundary between the two.
