The latest Beta 28.3.0.47 introduces several changes to the Enclosed Mode.

Now, instead of Opt/Alt, the mode is controlled by 'E' key (to avoid conflicting with the established modes).

Now, you need to tap 'E' ONCE after you start the marquee to toggle the mode — no need to hold it all the time. The mode will be active until you release the marquee.

There is no option to toggle the mode permanently at the moment, the team is evaluating this. So far this is the only mode that can be toggled in this fashion.

This mode works for both Selection and Group Selection tools, and hopefully behaves as we expect it to.

Right Oscar, I feel the same. My comment really wasn't sarcastic, I'm sad to see Adobe crumbling. And this uservoice thing... it's weird when you're asked for advice but the answers are so off that it feels like they actually don't want to hear from you. Actually it feels like they hate you. And I don't understand why.

I wonder what's wrong with Adobe that it takes them 5+ years to come up with such a terrible answer to that simple a problem in 2023. Are they understaffed? Busy working on something else? Become incompetent? Maybe they don't care? Have their programs become so bloated that it's become impossible to touch parts of the code without making everything explode? Maybe parts of the older code, core functions, have become obscure to present-day development teams? Maybe a bit of all of those? Honestly, I wonder.

The mechanisms of selection in Illustrator are poor. They need to be much, much more developed. Not being able to do complex, conditional selections in vector drawing is like playing guitar with one arm.

THIS. So much THIS. How can it not be better designed after all those years?

This is SO lacking in Illustrator. Guys at Adobe, take a look at what happens in 3DSMax or AutoCAD int his field. It's not acceptable for a program as old as Illustrator not to be at least a little better with complex selections. Shift for add, Alt for subtract, and Shift+Alt for exclusion. Simple, basic boolean operations.

Illustrator allows to save, load and managed partial and full  selection with Select > Save / Edit Selection commands.

UI is archaic, but it does the thing you want.

Please leave any comments regarding this feature here.

As for having a selection operation as an undoable operation — there is a separate feature request for this you can vote for: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/34934953

Yes, totally agree. Or make the act of selecting an undoable action.
