text align vertically
Allow text to be vertically centered in text box.
In InDesign, there is an option in the text frame properties, "Vertical Justification", with a "Center" option.
Or, the "baseline shift" option could be split into either specifying a number, as it is now, or specifying "center in text box".
This option is very important sometimes, such as having a tag symbol (e.g. circle) with a label inside that is either 1 or 2 lines high. Right now I have to have 2 paragraph styles (1 for 1-line text and 1 for 2-line text) so the 1 line text is in the middle of the tag, but also the 2 line text is also centered in the tag.
Hi Everyone,
This feature has been shipped in August 2020 release (version 24.3)
You may read about this here: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/whats-new/2020-3.html#vertical-align
Please update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
Thank you for all the feedback.

Vertical text-align is not available in illustrator. It is native to InDesign. It is a feature I would use on a daily basis when creating diagrams if it were available. I think it's a feature that should be added.
I can then align a label vertically and Horizontally in any text area as if I align the text in a table cell.

How is this not already part of the current program? This simple feature is so important.

Yet another fundamental feature that is often needed, but unbelievably lacking in Illustrator. Clearly, the billion dollar Adobe corporation can't afford another few developers to move Illustrator out of the 1990s at anything other than a snail's pace.

As much as I love being able to have this space available as some kind of support network for like minded individuals who share a common angst. Please can you move this from the backlog to the 'front' log and expedite this 'feature' and provide an indicative timeline for when we can expect its release?
I suggest you incorporate into a sub version release asap and not hold this one back until November's MAX event. Else you might subject yourselves to much ridicule on the subject of it taking you so long to finally see the light :D
Thanks!

We work a lot with text in Illustrator. MUST HAVE!!!

We do but only for a few assets. For instance, we're a box company and at times we need to create dielines for our customers that include a watermark. Well, because we have multiple designers, we needed a central source the designers can pull the watermark from and so I just uploaded it onto the cloud and it becomes easily accessible for everyone right inside Illustrator's "Libraries".

Cloud? Nope. Never use it. Don't have a use for it. Glad we're not the only agency that find it pointless.

does anyone seriously using this software professionally use adobe cloud to store files? Honestly i'm curious I know we don't.

I laugh every time I need to use this feature in Illustrator (which is most days). For all Adobe's up-selling of CC re. app integration and cloud syncing, their suite is still lacking UI and tool consistency in so many areas. And yes, I feel I know you all personally after all these years!

uhhhh indesign has it.

@Andrew
Appreciate the post Andrew. I tell you what though, no one SHOULD need a reference because it's been a standard non-optional feature in any text/design program for what... 10 years? 15? But after all this time who knows!
(Hi to everyone getting notifications for this increasingly ridiculous request) -
Andrew commented
Microsoft Excel has this feature if Adobe programmers need a reference.
They have a "Top/Middle/Bottom align" for vertical
and "Left/Center/Right align" for horizontal -

@Rob Hutchings – did someone say this feature was going to be added? I don't see that comment or post anywhere. (ie - from @Neeraj Nandkeolyar)

Thank you @Neeraj Nandkeolyar - this is so long over due! Could you give an approximate timeframe when we can expect this feature to be added?

Get your sh*t together Adobe. I have 100 pages and references need to be bottom aligned. Thanks for wasting my night.

This gets posted repeatedly, I'd like to guess there are more than 42~ people looking for this feature... Just the 42 people that haven't given up are commenting here.
I do not understand why this feature has not been added already... like YEARS ago. It's absolutely absurd that Adobe has not acknowledged this suggestion. It is a MUST HAVE feature for editing text... Like Microsoft word can do it... Excel can do it... Powerpoint can do it... InDesign can do it.... What on earth is preventing this feature from being added to Illustrator and/or Photoshop.
There is a semi-work around where you don't create a bounding box, instead click once with the text tool selected and just type and the text is automatically centered in the bounds. Though this doesn't help when I want to use a custom bounding box. Found this thread on the stackexchange: (https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/26212/how-to-center-text-vertically-within-a-textbox-in-photoshop)
Comon' Adobe... seriously.

So like, there's 42 comments here now. Is there a way to let Adobe know like "Hey, stupid – this is an obvious feature that should be there, and it's kind of ridiculous that it's not"?
