Could we consider the introduction of an extremely helpful, time-saving action, which would be to simply be able to release text from a path, rather than the numerous, convoluted processes we have to go through now to achieve the same result?

If I have applied text to the edge of a circle or shape, I should be able to just release that original text so that it appears as one line again so that I can use it in other parts of a project.

A certain software Adobe purchased almost twenty years ago had this feature and its practical application still hasn’t been integrated into the latest 'AI-enhanced' Illustrator. Just saying.

"Release Type from path" should be a basic command in the menu. Can't believe, in all the years of development, this isn't a thing! Please, it should be the simplest of tasks, not a workaround.

Agreed - check box default to ‘on’, please!

Agreed. The UI should be far more harmonised than it is. The Swatch palette is terrible, too. Why do we have to select Global to allow us to live edit colours in a project? ALL colours should be editable, the same way they work in ID.

The solution is pushed into Global Availability build 28.6.

PDF is now available as type in File > Export > Export As dialog.

However, File > Adobe PDF Presets menu, similar to one InDesign has, to allow even quicker export, is absent still.

If you want to have it, please upvote this new request here: http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/48670088

I’ve been in the same position as Margaret many times before, where I’ve been working on a PDF instead of Illustrator. It’s going to be hard to break the habit of ‘Save as’ for a while but how about removing/phasing it out completely now we have the option to Export?

An error occurred while saving the comment
    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

I agree. The export option does remember the setting if you keep the file open but if you Close or Quit, it defaults to PNG, which is very frustrating. See you back on the thread in a couple of years...

I’ve assigned the same keyboard command as InDesign - Command + E - I use PDF export way, way more than GPU switching, which was what the keyboard was originally assigned to. It appears to be working as expected. Nice to have some consistency across the apps now.

Yes, this happened to me AGAIN the other day, and my client was on a print deadline. Really made things awkward for me as I had to dash back from a meeting, re-do the file and re-send the corrected file to print. I don’t think Adobe realise (or care) how many problems these issues cause.

This has happened again for me in 28.4.1 when outlining fonts to create a PDF for print.

    Hi Egor
I've just opened the file up to save it for you and, typically, the project is outlining fine now!
If it happens again I'll try and save it out or video.

    Hi Egor

    I'm using 27.5
I've just copied the paragraph to a new document and it outlines fine. I also duplicated the text within the same document and all text boxes with bullet points outline fine.
Also, if I first select all text using the type tool, then deselect and use the Selection Tool, it outlines fine as well!

Unfortunately I cannot share the original document as it contains confidential information.

At least I have a workaround - duplicate the text and outline.

I've updated to 28.1 and still having this issue. It appears to be when opening earlier files, but not legacy files, e.g., the issue has just occurred when editing third-party-supplied files from January 2023. I can only work on the files in Outline Mode, otherwise I can't see anything!

The problem seems to be occurring when GPU Performance is switched off. When switching on it seems to be ok. I had the issue in previous iterations of the software but this is now a constant since I updated to 28.0.

The problem is, I can't keep GPU on all the time because I still get the flickering issue as well, so when it's on, I get the screen flicker, and when it's off I now get the screen redraw glitch!

This is STILL happening in 27.5.

A quick workaround/solution is to switch to Overprint Preview and then switch back, which seems to reset the screen again, but this problem has been going on for a long time now and still not resolved.

Yes, this appears to work in the way I would expect to use it. Thank you!
On a side note, when this version is released, please remember to switch the lightbox prompts off for saving to the cloud and sharing files - I don't use them, they're not needed as part of my workflow and they're really, really annoying!

If a native PDF export option is unachievable, can we not have Illustrator retain/remember the previous PDF settings I selected when I next choose to 'Save As' a PDF format? It always defaults back to Illustrator Default.

I am happy to share that we have fixed this bug in our latest release – 27.1.1 which is available worldwide now.

Going forward, our goal is to fix as many top User-Voice bugs as possible and as frequently as possible. Given the nature of the fixes, some of the bugs will take a longer time to fix, but we are on it.

You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

Thank you for all the feedback. Keep it coming!

There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:

    1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:

    https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086

    2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:

    http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47350001

All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.

Not liking this update at all. Classic layout was much better. Functionality-wise, my shapes aren't retaining the information for the bevel presets I've input so that I can re-edit and adjust once they're in position on my artwork plus, if I alter the shape proportions (i.e., enlarge the shape) I can't customise the bevels to maintain consistency with the smaller shapes. Also, there doesn't appear to be an option to re-set the shape so that it doesn't have 3D settings applied, so you have to recreate the shape from scratch or constantly have the target symbol appearing on your shapes. Very frustrating.

    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

It would be beneficial if we could have a 'Remove all settings' button directly within the 3D tab, so that the shape can be reverted back to to a default object. Handy for duplicating the object and expanding stroke that can sit behind the 3D version.

Hi Egor. Currently working fine after a full machine restart plus, I'm not working on the same level of complexity on my projects as the one I was when it occurred, so difficult to tell if it's the type of work or just the program in general. If it happens again I'll record it.

I work in numerous ways - I create my own assets but also edit client files and import PDF pages to edit or extract elements from. I also cut/paste across various projects I'm designing. When selecting items from other parties documents and dragging the colours into the swatch palette they do not assign Global colours - I have to double-click the colour and manually assign a Global option before it becomes flexible enough to edit. I am wondering why there is an option in the first place - if you are working with colours, as you do in InDesign, surely it would be best to just make everything Global as default, to make it easier to edit? Why do you need instances where a colour you're using is non-Global?

    Hi Everyone,

This has been completed, and has available since June 2020 release (version 24.2)

Please go to Illustrator preferences > General > and select “Show/Hide Rulers” (refer attached screenshot). After checking this, if you hit ‘Show Rulers (Ctrl/Cmd + R)’, then the rulers will appear in every document (new and old), even after relaunching Illustrator.

Please update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html

Thank you for all the feedback.

So I took the issue up with the support team and this is the message I received back after 3 rounds of explaining why the feature they've introduced wasn't the one we asked for:

"We would like to inform you that, the option has been built in the Preferences which allows rulers to be hidden/visible across all open document.
Turn on “Hide/Show Rulers Across All Documents” Preferences > General.

After turning this ON, do Hide/Show Rulers in the View menu (Cmd/Ctrl + R) once to refresh rulers.

So whenever you open a new file after turning on the option "Show/Hide Rulers across all Documents," you just need to enable the "Show Rulers" once and then whenever you open/create a new document, the rulers will show up.

Hence its not a feature request, the feature has already been implemented in the application."

They don't get it, period. They don't understand our needs because I don't think they actually use the software they create for us. They build elements they 'think' we need and ones they 'think' are better for our workflows but really they haven't got a clue.

Neeraj - I'm shocked and disgusted as a purchasing customer that you or a team member haven't at least revisited this feed to discuss your reasons for delivering an inaccurate representation of what we voted for. We suggested an idea, it's better than the one you've implemented - why do you not listen to us?

I've just spent almost an hour speaking with Adobe support (via the 'Contact Us' chat system on their home page - might be worth try?) and I don't think they actually understand what is wrong with the solution they've delivered. After 45 mins of explaining that I'm not happy with the level of communication and support since Feb 4th (and the solution they delivered) I've just been asked to quit all apps, reset my prefs and restart my machine! I honestly think there's a total breakdown of communication - I don't think they know what's wrong with the feature request they've given us, or they simply don't care that they've misinterpreted it.

An error occurred while saving the comment
    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

    Hi Bulent

Thank you for your suggestion but that solution doesn't work. If you turn rulers on or off you cannot save the document to write over the existing profile. If you make any changes which allow you to re-save the profile, you simply get an error when trying to save. See my attachment.

Additionally, it sounds like this solution wouldn't solve the issue of opening legacy files, just new projects?

An error occurred while saving the comment
    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

For the love of whichever God you follow, please sort this out properly or remove your 'completed' status until this feature has been built and integrated properly. Or should we set up a new feature request and hassle you through another channel? This is absolutely typical of Adobe - no proper customer support or communication and not listening properly when we do ask for a practical feature. You've clearly added a preference that you guys feel we need, not a feature that we'll actually find useful. Unless you keep your application open, this new option is absolutely useless because you still have to switch Rulers on when you first open a project. Can you please explain the thinking behind your solution rather than the one we have requested? Personally, I don't think the team can do what we actually want and have introduced a bit of a band-aid effort to placate our frustrations. It's all rather sad and predictable - I would have been surprised if we'd actually received an update with something we'd actually make use of.

An error occurred while saving the comment
    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

Neeraj - This HAS NOT been resolved/completed as per the original feature request. Every time you quit the programme and reopen it the rulers defaults back to OFF, which is now even more frustrating because if we want to keep them ON across all files we now have the rigmarole of going to Preferences to do so, or keeping Illustrator permanently open. It's a pointless waste of effort and an even more protracted way of working. Is there some kind of communication barrier issue here? Do you not understand what we're asking for? Please undo your completed status as you clearly have not added what we have all voted for.

    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

They seem to be too busy shoving Cloud and Library integration down our throats to be bothered with the practical things we actually use on a daily basis. I really don't understand what goes through the development teams' heads - they give us a shiny new (extremely slow, barely responsive) 2019 suite where you can customise tools and tool palettes and manage elements in a Properties panel, but the simple stuff like being able to set Rulers and Preview buttons for Scale & Rotate to default 'on' don't seem to feature in their improvement plans.

I wonder if they any of them actually use the tools that they build or have professional users testing for them?

It's interesting seeing the difference in response from Quark to the members on their official QuarkXpress Facebook page - they changed the functionality of some of the Type tools in the measurements panel in the first release of 2018 and people weren't happy with what they'd changed. Guess what? They reverted the entire panel functionality back to how it was previously and released an update, all within 4 weeks. That's customer service for you.

    Eddie Deighton commented  ·

I think it is a big deal. I create between 10-30 files a day where I have to show rulers, and I'm pretty sure that's the default on a daily basis for every other designer or artworker. Why it hasn't been implemented already I have no idea. Clearly, those that build the software don't use it regularly, or don't understand the processes we customers go through on a daily basis. Either or, it shows a lack of connection to your consumer audience.

I laugh every time I need to use this feature in Illustrator (which is most days). For all Adobe's up-selling of CC re. app integration and cloud syncing, their suite is still lacking UI and tool consistency in so many areas. And yes, I feel I know you all personally after all these years!

The simplest of features, yet Adobe would rather concentrate on 3D, perspective, warp, rotation, flipping, etc. This should have been introduced years ago.
