Make 'Recent fonts' section in Character palette work alongside with selecting current font in font list
Recently AI made focus in font list in Character palette jump to the top of the list, in 'Recent fonts' part, thus making impossible to browse fonts in alphabetical order — you have to scroll font list manually to position.
This is stupid.
In 22.1.0 this request has been realized:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/32044567-option-to-disable-recent-fonts-feature
Now user can set '0' in Preferences to completely eliminate 'Recent' section in font list — and this magically 'fixes' selection of current font in context.
This is stupid.
I personally want to use BOTH 'Recent fonts' AND current font focusing.
I don't care about it won't be selected in Recent: just show me chosen number of recent font options above the line (without selection), make it fixed (or make it go away right after I start scrolling) and select current font in the main list.
Just like CorelDraw does it (see the image attached).
Don't do as Microsoft Word does (it actually does it wrong too).

The latest Beta Build 29.6.91 introduces first changes to the way how recent font section works. Now Ai tries to find the position of the currently chosen font in the main list.
There are several known issues.
- If you deselect a text and select it again — Ai will still jump to the recent section’s font when we open the dropdown
- The recent section is not fixed and gets scrolled while navigating the list, making the access to recent fonts harder that it is now in the General build
Please try to test it and leave comments.

THIS WORKED! Thank you!!
Maybe this will help. In Prefs, go to Type and look for "Number of Recent Fonts:" with a drop down box. If you make this at 0, then Font List acts like it used to for the most part.

This feature was proposed in 2018 now we are almost at the end of 2023, is there anyway to know the progress, if you wait for more users to ask for, this will never happen in this case, it’s a common sense for a designer to get back where he was he was in that font. Affinity Designer has it. I have ideas to simplify the fonts selection method that has not been helpful at all.
I may attach a file with my idea soon, -

Affinity Designer already has it. I can select any line of text in my document and be able to see it among all the other fonts.
I’m a designer and a heavy Illustrator user, if I am trying different fonts for a logo I should be able to go back to where I left of and continue down the list of fonts in order. Sometimes I have to stop and try the different family if that one font, but when I get back I have to search for it, the annoying part is it is on the top of the list among other fonts I just used, this defeats the purpose of favorite font.
Please put this on top of your list. 🙏 Thanks. -
There is a separate larger entry about the first problem: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/33466396-make-recent-fonts-section-in-character-palette-w
I suggest you vote there. So far you can just disable the Recent Fonts section altogether to avoid the focus jumping back, by setting Number of Recent Fonts to 0 in Preferences > Type.As for the second problem — I don’t exactly recall when the results list got modified the way you describe it. I recall in CS6 and earlier it just had not the dynamic dropdown with the filtered results, it was just putting the closest match into the filed wile you type, basically autosuggesting. I find a new method more useful... Can you share more details on this — when do you remember Ai had it? Can you provide some screenshots?
Also — please try to log one problem per report/request. Clumping these together makes prioritization harder, and UV does not really support splitting.

I cannot agree more with #1
It's so unproductive to have to repeatedly start a search again, each time you select a font.

Yotam Guttman's response from 2 Nov 2022 is spot on. THIS is the issue - not "recent fonts".

when I look for a typeface for a project, I typically go down the font list and pick all the options that grab my attention by placing each on the artboard next to all the others. once Ive gone through all my fonts I do the final filtration.
this process has been made **** lately. every time I pick a font, the list collapses (despite me not being done with it) and the option I selected jumps ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE FONT LIST.
my only option for browsing through my font catalogue is scrolling back all the way down to the approximate point where the list collapsed and looking for the point I stopped, so I could continue on browsing.
it's the worst experience to look for a typeface for a design project. previously, the selected typeface didnt go all the way up to the recently selected fonts, so I could just duplicate the text box and continue on from there. now it's impossible. perhaps you should consider an internal font library or something... but first thing, disabling that feature that causes the selected option to make you lose your place on the list is definitely a priority issue.

「最近使用したフォントの表示数」を「0」にする、というのは全くの盲点でした…

CS6からのジャンプアップなので、まだ追いついていない部分が多々ありますので頑張って追いつきたいと思います。

A workaround to this would be to go to Preferences > Type and set the Number of Recent Fonts to 0.
And it does not mean it is fixed, no, you should add your vote to another request about this: https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/33466396-make-recent-fonts-section-in-character-palette-w -

Michael, if you go to Preferences > Type and set '0' for Number of Recent Fonts — does it 'fix' the issue for you?
The team had this functionality broken when they added Recent block and we need more voices to get it fixed back.

Similar, but not to be merged, with this:

Yes! I agree with Jan. I wish the font list picked up from the one listed, rather than at the top. And I wish we could toggle on and off the "most used" part. Some projects that would be awesome but on new ones it's so annoying. Also I would like to be able to turn off any font I want. There are so many default fonts (especially in like arabic or Chinese) that I will never use and are just clutter I have to scroll past every time.

Totally agree!!! I have more than 2000 fonts and when I have to select some fonts to try into a logo I lose a lot of time because all the time the scroll restart from the top "A"... years ago was perfect!

Kim Figured it out. (more or less) in preferences, type, set recent fonts to zero.
THANK YOU! jesus that sucked.

Illustrator used to save your place when you were scrolling through fonts, so that the last one used was where the list defaulted to. Now it bounces back to the top of the list every time which is insanely frustrating when trying to choose a typeface. Please add the option to go back to that.

NOBODY WANTS TO SCROLL THROUGH EVERY FONT. MAKE THE LIST START AT THE LAST USED FONT FOR GODS SAKE.

Font search function update a while back has 2 big issues.
1: The font family list sends you back up to the top when you want to find a new font. It used to send you to where that font lived in the list. Instead, it sends you back up to the top to "recent fonts."
2: When you search by typing in the font name ie: "helv..", you are given ever font style & weight in that family. It used to just list them out with little carrots next to the names and indicated how many styles it had with a (##).
Please allow users to revert back to the old font family list.

Seriously? Why can't you guys get it together??? Why are you forcing us to scroll through entire font lists to replace missing fonts and not just setting it up like it is in InDesign???
