Improved 3D effects and Adobe Substance materials
We have introduced new and improved '3D and Materials' effects in 26.0 this year. These effects have been fully rebuilt using modern rendering technology and apart from being much more stable than classic 3D effects, they also allow you to:
* Apply and edit 3D effects conveniently through a non-blocking panel with real time preview.
* Texture artwork using Adobe Substance 3D materials that are highly adjustable. Choose from built-in materials in the panel or upload your own.
* Light up artwork with environment and directional light along with shadows.
* Create smooth and curvy extrusions using the new Inflate option.
* Rotate artwork more easily using the new on-canvas controls.
* Once you've setup your 3D object, render it using Ray tracing with adjustable quality options.
There are more features we're actively working on bringing to these effects. Please share your feedback and suggestions from your experience of using these new effects.
There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:
1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086
2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:

All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.

This tool is broken. In fact, the entire application is bloated and prone to crashing. After using Adobe products for thirty years, I feel Adobe treats its subscribers as beta testers. I'd trade any of the new features that I never use for some stability. If this is the future then it is probably time for me to find another trade.

@Armindo, exactly. Fit options, better texture quality, artifacts... I know the team is aware of it, is going to improve it further, but nothing more than that.
-
@Dean, yeah, the lighting one the pure white object gets gray... Even if you crank up all the values in the Lighting tab, both Intensities to 200, — it is still stays somewhat like 3% gray. Hope the team will consider tweaking it.

Hi from Portugal!
I'm giving some opportunity to the new 3D and Materials but i'm increasingly frustrated with some new issues with map art options in ways that i was not with the old version.
The new version is a great and wanted evolution but needs more refinements and options when i apply it to some projects with revolve option:
- option to identify what part is wanted to apply map art;
- a scale to fit option (much needed with revolve option to make it match start with end;
- the new tool creates unwanted visually rendered artifacts;
- in the end it produces visually really low quality for pixel mapped art;Can you please improve much more those issues, please?

Why does the effect create an image instead of paths in expand appearance? This is Illustrator, and all i get is an image??? I'm probably missing something here...

fix exporting issues. The asset is spread out in stager when imported

This has been rendered unusable in comparison to the previous versions. A simple option to disable the preview would be excellent when rotating etc. It took an hour to create something we could have done in several minutes, previously. I'm confused as to why this has become so difficult. With 3D being deprecated in PS it's a nightmare.

Eric, so far you can save 3D settings with Graphics Styles panel. This is an intended way to save settings like this. Does it work for you?
As for expand to vectors — Ai can now do that, with the 'Expand as wireframes' button in the Quick Actions section, at the bottom of the Object tab of the 3D and Materials panel. It is not perfect yet, but what enhancements do you mean in particular?

Eric Hayes commented
Please add a "saved presets" options to this panel or at least on each sub tab (Object, Materials, and Lighting) This would greatly increase workflow.
Please enhance the ability of the 3D renders to export or expand to vector based iterations of the final render.

To Kumar, 🙏Please don’t wish for a new software to handle 3D, Adobe is already planning to present us with 5 new apps, not part of the CC, we have to pay extra, so I say just ask Adobe to make a decent 3D tool in illustrator.
To answer Raha,
a question about the Symbols, with the new 3D you can bypass that and use the 3D pallets to drop your Graphic under Material, then access it from there and click only once and be aware that it might take a couple of extra seconds to show up on your 3D object, if you don’t have a fast computer. -

Why did you make 3D worse? The old way was far superior.

Great to see this, it may be starting point and very basic but I would like to see a dedicated 3d software with a simplified, intuitive, usability features like XD as an alternative 3d software to CAD/3dmax/maya/blender etc, I think thats possible!

The main problem is that when I add a symbol to map it to my work, it shows that it is maped but nothing is seen on the artboard. Even the circle which is designed to help us move the maped symbol is there but the symbol itself is not there.

I hope Map Art will continue to be part of the new 3D features in Illustrator.
I think Photoshop users are the ones will need to use illustrator’s 3D features or use the newly developed Substance app; it will not be part of the CC, it’s an extra cost.
I’m more of a vector artist, and if Photoshop does not have the full 3D features, I can use illustrato,
but I need feedback about the Map Art in Illustrator.
Thanks -

Hey guys, Not a huge fan of this new Exclude and Bevel UI. You need to bring back a way to turn off preview cause its soooo slow and reloads on every key stroke. I prefer the old UI where I can drag the objects positon and see real time position change
