An error occurred while saving the comment Peter Villevoye commentedIt's indeed a situation I've come across this boot-up behaviour as well ! With the application panel activated (on the Mac) your file is almost unaccessible by the jungle in the Startup, Home screen, or whatever you want to call it. Clicking the Ai icon and arrow in the left corner or a Recent thumbnail don't work – the home screen just stays in view. Only after switching the app panel off/on, or rearranging windows by the menu command, or a anything else that might kick the windows manager to behave properly, the active window flips in view.

An error occurred while saving the comment Peter Villevoye commentedThis panel is a downright half-baked attempt to re-establish clarity in this domain. But it becomes just another troublemaker. In fact, the Appearance panel (which almost no-one knows, understands, or values enough since Illustrator version 10) should have been renamed "Properties" (it could finally work out nice for this beauty).
I acknowledge the need for a central place to let novice users 'do simple stuff' (like Path operations and all), but naming it "Properties" and tossing just half of the kitchen sink in it (which half is a mystery), was an unwise decision. Call it "Quick Actions" or something they are more likely to relate to. Then it's also more obvious that more sophisticated features and options are still somewhere else to be found.

And this update just popped up while I'm replaying the MAX 2019 keynote, with almost every presented application being totally aware of objects and masks. In earlier days one would jokingly say: "How many developers does it take to [do this or that]". Nowadays I'd be asking: "How many Sensei forces are needed to Just Do It ??" Let's send a prayer to the Product Owners to get this one onto the Agile Sprint Board...
