text align vertically
Allow text to be vertically centered in text box.
In InDesign, there is an option in the text frame properties, "Vertical Justification", with a "Center" option.
Or, the "baseline shift" option could be split into either specifying a number, as it is now, or specifying "center in text box".
This option is very important sometimes, such as having a tag symbol (e.g. circle) with a label inside that is either 1 or 2 lines high. Right now I have to have 2 paragraph styles (1 for 1-line text and 1 for 2-line text) so the 1 line text is in the middle of the tag, but also the 2 line text is also centered in the tag.
Hi Everyone,
This feature has been shipped in August 2020 release (version 24.3)
You may read about this here: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/using/whats-new/2020-3.html#vertical-align
Please update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
Thank you for all the feedback.

Hello. Referring to Illustrator 2022, In the "Area Type Options" menu where you added the Vertical Alignment – which was definitely needed thanks – you incorrectly labeled it "Horizontal." I wrote to Adobe corporate about this a while ago but received no response. When I came across this thread while looking for something else entirely, I figured it was a good place to mention it again. Frankly I was shocked at the error and even more surprised I'm the only one who has noticed. My guess is I'm not the only one and it may already be fixed in a later version. Anyway thanks for listening!

ist there a scripting option for that new vertical alignment? I've checked with the 2022 scripting reference but could not find any?

@Jen I literally mention this in EVERY Adobe product when the "Help Improve" popup comes up.
I tell them to walk down the hall and wake up the Illustrator development team so they can start doing their job. -

@David Cuesta, You would think so! I see you were the first to open this feature suggestion in 2017, and it's been nearly a year since I first posted in here. ADOBE!

@jen, for sure, but then you would think 71 comments and 285 votes would constitute something to work on.....

To those in the forum, fill out the "Help improve Adobe products" popup when restarting the program. I never leave these blank, even when I'm in a hurry.

Yeah Marc that is a great idea too. Kind of like the way Sketch Does.

Something I'd like even further and just in general—vertical alignment on baseline. I want to have the ability to ignore the descender region when aligning without having to create outlines. Both point text and text area boxes have white space underneath the baseline—even if the text is in all caps!

Please for the love of everything that anyone prays to for whatever reason can we PLEASE get vertical text align? It's got to be one of the easiest features to implement and it would save countless numbers of users countless hours of their time. Please please please, and thank you thank you thank you!

HOW is it 2020 and Illustrator does not have this?
Good to see that Creative Cloud subscription money going to good use!
Unbelievable Adobe. -

Yes! Use similar text frame alignment (centered vertically, bottom alignment) as in InDesign.
Thank you.

Oh yeah......... for real....... " added to backlog"
Only one of the most powerful typographic tools, used by almost every graphic designer alive, everyday....... but yes no vertical alignment tool. Lots of wonderful gradient fill features tho.
I wonder why Sketch is gaining so much ground......

I was somehow perplexed that after searching for "Vertical align text in Illustrator" brought me to a stackoverflow post from 2012 that this is not possible, I landed here. I mean I found it unbelievable that this was not implemented in 2012 yet - but here I am now.
What the f... **** xD Are you serious?

What Rob said... THIS NEEDS TO BE MOVED TO THE (((FRONT))) OF THE LINE! A super basic feature that even CorelDraw had 10 years ago. I'm losing a ton of money on an infographic project I under-bidded - not realizing this option wouldn't be available to me and will now take twice as long. It feels like I'm suddenly in the Twilight Zone - just now discovering that Illustrator can't justify text vertically. Mind = Blown.

I could do this in CorelDraw - 10 years ago!! I have a huge infographic chart to build for a client with graphic cubes that are all the same size but some have 1 to 4 lines of text. So, I have to manually adjust the text frame of every single one, align the text with the object, and then go and re-align the whole row again, and then distribute objects evenly everytime because this one BASIC feature is missing? I'm so disgusted that I'm now losing 2 hours of money on this project because I was searching for an answer that doesn't exist. Not to mention how much more I'll lose now that I'm aware there's no vertical text alignment feature. Absolutely unreal to me.
