Everyone here is correct. Adobe, please stop sitting on your hands and fix this. You're wasting untold hours of your designers' time by failing to address this ridiculously basic need. Just because you feel like you're the only game in town, it shouldn't stop you from adding basic UX improvements that are a decade overdue. I'd much rather have this functionality than some flashy new feature I'll never use in a lifetime.

I like to a preview on as a default

Adobe Illustrator CC 2020 — same off by default. WTF

For years I've been asking myself "Who wants the Preview off by default? Who is Adobe accommodating with this??" It's insanity.

I am exasperated with Adobe as a company. I enjoy using Lightroom but as for InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop… I'm just looking forward to retire so I don't have to use them any more

Please implement this. The status quo is absolutely infuriating.

It is very stupid. I wonder what is up with this company. Get yourself together Adobe! You can do it!

As Boris said, it's been 6 years...we all know Illustrator is a sad old dinosaur in the Adobe world, so maybe 6 years is about the appropriate time for whoever has the unfortunate job of working on this god-awful ****-in-the-toilet of Adobe software to get out of their La-Z-Boy and click a few buttons with their arthritic fingers and have "previews ON". We unfortunate Illustrator users all know the only reason we use Illustrator is because our clients use it. Given the choice, we'd have jumped ship years ago. So yes, we sympathise with whoever has drawn the short straw at Adobe and is lumbered with propping up Illustrator - we feel your pain, we really do - like you, we all secretly wish it would die, but please make its final few years as pain-free as possible and make those preview default to ON. Please.

Bump for this idea, it's been 6 years now... 6 years that we ask for this. I'd take you potentially a few lines of codes in the pref panel... Add the option to Align to Artboard by default too, same as Preview on by default, little annoyances that put together makes you lose hours and hours of work per year. yo seriously, Adobe can you guys please just add this thing. relative to every other random thing you keep adding, this is soooo simple and clearly desired. if you don't believe the latter yet, just do a survey or something. pleasssse.

It's been well over a year since this request first appeared...how hard can it be to alter this? And for anyone who wants the Preview checkbox to default to OFF (like it currently does), just have the Preview checkbox remember its state, so if you've clicked it ON (which everyone always does every. single. bloody. time. you apply any kind of effect) then it STAYS on forever...until you click it OFF. If you click it OFF, it stays OFF forever...until you click it ON. It's not rocket science, but it's not the kind of thing that Adobe's ridiculous and woefully misguided marketing department thinks will elicit "oohs" and "aaahs" from an audience at MAX. How wrong they'd be! Nobody REALLY needs puppet pins, or the ridiculous perspective grid thing or many of the ludicrous fripperies added in the past decade. I CHALLENGE Adobe to add a persistent checkbox for previews AND a workable corner pin distort, show it at MAX and you'll have the biggest standing ovation ever in the long and dull history of this hideous application.

Agreed. 12 years ago this was for performance reasons. And then we got used to it. Now it's just a waste of a click.

How complicated it must be for them to fix this if after 12 years this is still not an option. Good thing we now have Adobe Sensei, though.

I can't express how infuriating I find it I have to click check preview every time. Somebody in the UX team . product need to seriously look at what they achieved in their career and begin asking themselves questions.

.... not to mention they can easily make it work for everyone by having a preference that can be set for on or off on the preview (which 99.9% of users would set for the opposite of the current unchangeable defualt.) Illustrator and Adobe don't give a sh!t though. Sigh.

Also, it would be nice to have a box to click for *copies,* as exists in Transform, however the ability to offset in points or pixels, rather than as a percentage, as is currently in Transform.

I requested this a while ago - I find it really annoying having to turn Preview on EVERY time I use any effect. Their answer was along the lines of "a very tiny proportion of Illustrator users create very complex artwork on pathetically underpowered computers, and Previewing an effect can really slow it down, so that's why we always have it turned off by default". Which, as you know, is a ridiculous reply, because:
1. Why is Illustrator so slow? Oh, because it's running the same clunky, 31-year old code from version 1, and they're too lazy to fix it.
2. Anyone creating a complex illustration on an underpowered machine would expect previews to be slow, and they are a tiny fraction of users.
3. And just....FFS Adobe, get your act together!

There doesn't even need to be a non-preview option, let alone that be the unchangeable default setting. There is literally NO situation where not seeing the preview of an affect before you exit the dialog box is the preferred setting. I've been using Illustrator for decades and I've never applied an affect without first clicking the preview button, since that's what Illustrator makes us all do, each and every time.

THANK YOU!!!! This, along with the rulers not being the default setting when starting a new document, are easily the most annoying and baffling non-features about Illustrator, with it's 30+ year history of product development.
