Stop truncating filenames in Recent files
AI truncates names of my files in Open Recent Files menu.
Why?!
Some of my files differ only in that truncated parts. I have to guess and remember.
Please, give me an option to set limit myself (in Prefs file or Dialogue) or remove limit completely.
The character limit for the items in File > Recent menu is now increased to 100. Beyond that, the filenames now start truncating from the middle, to keep both the start and the end of the names visible.

That sounds great.
If I am not mistaken I am already (17 June 2022) seeing my file names in full (about 40-50 Roman letter characters long) as I open the Recent Files menu? Very welcome.
It is massively easier to work with when one can see the whole file name.
Thank you very much to the engineers for working on this improvement. -

Literally needs the width of the menu to be doubled in size or preferably set so that its contents are always visible, if that's possible?
It's currently so frustrating to use and can be a real hit and miss affair whether you land on the right one or not. Made worse by the fact that when you hit the wrong item, it gets promoted to the top of the stack, thereby making you more likely to hit it again in the future.

Stop truncating filenames in Recent Files.
Some years ago, I was able to find a file and increase the number of 'recent files' in the list and I think I was able to make the menu wider to allow for full file names in Windows 64 machines.
Can we please change this. It is my number one snag during the day.

And if the Illustrator dev team is stuck on this - they could always shout across the corridor at the Indesign guys and gals who seem to have managed it. ;)

I am onboard with this improvement! If allowing the full name takes too much space consider truncating the middle so it shows up as "start-of-file-name...end-of-name.ai" I often put the revision number/date at the end of the file name so my list may contain multiple of the "exact same" file name but what is cut off is the revision date that makes them distinct.
Thank you!

I'm forever creating an Illustrator file, saving a copy as a PDF, then saving the Illustrator file. I end up with two names in the Open Recent Files list and I can't see the file extension so I don't know later which one is which. If the file name was truncated but the file extension was retained that alone would be a big step forward.

Mouseover will reveal FULL filename. When working with multiple versions of a project with long filenames, they get cut off by the context menu; if you have V1 and V2 at the end of a filename, it can't be seen, and this makes it easy to open up the wrong file. A simple mouseover, both in the TOP MENU and the RECENT GALLERY (because even the thumbnails can look identical) will be useful for opening the correct file the first time.

This is such a simple issue, but so important. When exporting artboards for example, the "Recent Items" menu is populated with all of the exported files. Making the menu unuseable.
Help!

Same problem, different file types with the same name will show up side by side in recent documents list making it impossible to pick the intended one to open.

Yes, completely agreed! I need to know which file the thumbnail is pointing to: The original ai? The PDF or jpg I just saved the file as? I can see it if I hover the mouse over the thumbnail, but it takes several beats for it to pop up. So much wasted time. Just let me see the whole name!
And possibly default to show the AI files ONLY -- with an option to show all if that's what I need.

I would like to suggest more width for the list of recent items, so the extension is always visible. Or don't widen it, but always use the smaller right part of the list for the extension.
My problem is that i work in a .AI file, then save copies for export or compatible EPS versions for my supplier or customer. If my filename is too long the extension disappears, and i cannot longer open the file from the recent items as i don;t know if i open the AI, EPS or PDF version.

Yes, with descriptive filenames with heavy keywording, this makes the very useful open recent file function dead in the water. 36 characters plus ellipsis seems to be the limit of display, which would have worked fine when Windows and Macintosh had 8.3 and 32 character filename limits respectively, but that was over a generation ago! We should be able to use this function, not be punished for using descriptive filenames that make files easier to find on a server! Open Recent Files was a good idea from the 90s that has long since been obsolete in the modern software era.

This is sorely needed. Have there been any hints that Adobe will implement a fix yet?

For sure, this is frustrating - see the problem in action here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pu7e0ljq5k0fec3/2018-10-30_14-29-45.png

YES! — And only show AI files please!
When I export a bunch of JPG's from artboards, all of those JPG files are in recent items as well — which is madness.
