Allow legacy behavior for "Rearrange Artboards"
While I'm sure some people welcome Illustrator's new features for rearranging the artboards, I have found it to be finicky and weird. There should be an option that defaults to the center of the work area, like it used to do automatically. This new behavior, of having to select where the artboards go just complicates a once simple process.

Starting with Beta 29.7.1 the Rearrange dialog got a separate dedicated feature, currently called 'Align Manually'.
With it disabled, artboards get positioned instantly in the center of the canvas, as it behaved previously.
When this is enabled, you will enter the positioning mode after pressing OK — to allow rearranging only some artboards, to address this request.
With more than 1 artboard selected (but not all), the mode gets enabled automatically (and becomes locked).

This update makes the workflow needlessley complicated

This is a very annoying feature. The artboards don't snap to pixel, leaving me with artboards with decimal values in X and Y. It's random and chaotic. At least allow me to snap to pixel.

The new process of rearrange artboard function is not useful; please bring back the legacy behavior immediately.

The old rearrange behavior should be the default with an option to toggle the new feature. Also, it should snap to whole numbered pixels by default so we don't get partial pixel locations. As it is right now, I have to correct every artboard prior to exporting so the dimensions always export correctly.

Please add an option to rearrange artboards the old way

Who wanted this?! How could it possibly be useful? Please revert back!

The problem with manually placing it, which will affect export resolution because artboard coordinates aren't pixel perfect. At least add a way to align it.

Oh yes please. I see why this option is here and it could potentially be very useful, but it either needs MUCH more granular control (snap to pixel, etc.), OR an option to use the original behavior.

アートボードの再配置をした後、自動でドキュメントウィンドウの中心配置できるようにしてほしい。

Here to cast my vote! Thank you Ton for linking to this post. As I said on the AI forums, this new mouse click behaviour has made the Rearrange Artboards tool completely useless for me, as I use it to ensure my artboards are aligned perfectly to whole pixels on the X and Y axis for exporting without any extra pixels.
A checkbox to turn off the canvas click, or a shortcut to snap it to pixels, would work just fine, and allow anyone who uses the new feature to continue enjoying it.

@Janendra, 44 users would disagree with you :)
This is a feature requested by the users — http://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/32653399
The problem is that the choice to position rearranged artboards has become forced on us, in cases where 'just center on canvas' would have sufficed.
Plus it ignores pixel grid snapping in cases it matters... -

just revoke the "new feature". if it ain't broke don't fix it

I agree, it’s not intuitive now and click the wrong way and no arrangement happens!
I like the idea and how some of it works but the actual rearrangement needs fixed.
The way XD does this is so much simpler.

We definitely need the default placement option back when rearranging artboards - this new way adds so much extra clicks and work in majority of cases, plus it makes it extra difficult to avoid fractional pixel alignment.

The easiest way to align artboards to the pixelgrid (to avoid additional pixels on image export) was to use rearrange artboards, it automatically aligned them. Now it takes extra steps and even makes artboards that were perfectly aligned contain fractional x/y values.

The feature to rearrange artboards no longer works in 29.6. I had to downgrade to 29.5.1 and then it works fine. In specific, when you click on the Artboards windows and then use the icon in the lower left corner to pick the option to "Rearrange All Artboards" in 29.6, instead of actually doing that, it shows a strange view with a dotted line border and when you click to get rid of that the artboards remain in their original order. Downgrading to 29.5.1 appears to be the only solution for this problem.

Egor, that would work for me! I do see the benefit of it in certain circumstances, but I often arrange all the artboards at once for print production.

Audri, I agree, but I’d like to know more.
What if this worked only when some artboards were selected (this is the reason why this step was added, to allow partial rearrangement), and skipped when none (or one) were selected? Would this work for you?
