The artboard export solution is especially bad if your exporting white text adjacent to the clipped graphics.

This issue converted my whole office to using Sketch. When people ask me why I don't use Adobe products, or why I think their company is destined to go the way of the dinosaur, I show them this issue. Anybody who has to use Illustrator for web work has encountered it and has to create artboards for each asset. Why even have an asset export tool?

This kills the asset workflow for me.

Asset export doesn't respect clipping masks. The size of the image becomes the size of the clipped objects. Nobody wants this to happen. It has been going on for years. Let's fix this.

I understand why this is done like this but we need the option to clip if we want.

I also got the workaround posted by xlle (May 16, 2018) to work!—on an illustrator objects inside clipping masks, not on raster ones.

Basically you select the clipped object and hit the Divide button on the Pathfinder window. Not really a fix since it's destructive (so make sure to keep copies of the original objects), but faster than cropping in Photoshop afterwards.

I grew up on Aldus/Macromedia Freehand from v2.0 and miss its ability to clip off an image with areas outside the clipping path being rendered invisible and unselectable. This missing feature in Illustrator makes selection a pain and one has to search in the layers panel to find the right object in complex multiple-layered artworks.

Steps to reproduce:
1. In a new document, create a black circle 200 pt x 200 pt
2. Create a black square centered on top of it, 100 pt x 100 pt
3. Select both objects
4. Select Object > Clipping Mask > Make
5. Select newly created clipped group and right-click > Collect For Export > As Single Asset

Actual results:
- Exported asset will include the clipped object

Expected results:
- Exported asset should *not* include anything outside the bounds of the clipping mask

The more I get into the depths of this forum the more I realize how almost every Adobe power user has a problem with the way Adobe thinks we use their software. Maybe we should make this the number one task on this board: Adobe don't hide in your think tank - ask your customers!!!

Has this been fixed yet? I'd like to not have to jump between illustrator and Affinity Designer to do something so simple. Please and thanks.

Has this issue been reported as a bug? I mean apart from this post here in Feature Requests, maybe it can have better visibility there as a bug report. I tried searching there with no success.

I'm seriously surprised to have found this issue has been talked about for 2 years with no update. As others say, this more of a bug than a feature request. I can't think of a reason why anyone would want to export an image without honouring the clipping mask.

I can't believe how slow Adobe is being here. I use quite well-known music software and when I report a bug or feature request (if it's a useful one) if gets fixed/implemented within a few days (at most). This is what a modern technology company does... Adobe seems positively stone age in comparison. Remember what happened to Quark, Adobe.

Not honoring the clipping path on export should be considered a BUG not a feature request. Please fix ASAP. I see this has been on going for two years... That is pretty poor.
