It is simple, there is a scan done layer by layer, from first layer to layer 80 there was no opaque pixels. So crop to layer 80
Do same for left right and bottom. That way if your content was on the bottom right corner or wherever it will still crop accordingly to its values for opaque pixels. If you need a transparent frame I guess there could be an option to say retain transparent frame. And do a -x pixels for the transparent border counting from your opaque pixels. Voila. Is not that difficult.

Ryuuzaki, Its not as simple as you say.. I can think of reasons why your simple explanation will not work.. What if I want to clip an area but the only content is on the lower right corner.. in your explanation only my content will be showing in my png thus making it smaller than I want it to be. what if I want a transparency as well..
I do agree tho.. this is Adobe.. this shouldn't be that difficult for them. Should have been implemented years ago.

Not sure what is complex about it, other adobe and not adobe software is being doing it for ages.
Step 1 Exports to png as normal.
Step 2 Grab that PNG and crop image to the frame bounds of opaque pixels.
Done.
Liquify and content-aware are way more complex than this. I am a developer and this is not complex, knowing that saving that unnecessary transparent space that falls off even the art boards and not doing anything about it hopping people will shut up and deal with it has another name.

Keep it burning. This is not a breakthrough feature... It should've been implemented instead of some sketchy mobile extra apps or some extra features. You have a solid software that need some basic improvement. I hope you would focus your energies on making the basic perfect then moving on to the extra things. Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks for raising this. We completely understand the pain of having large raster bounds arising from clipped groups. We are actively pursuing this. And all we can say right now, that it is bit complex. We'll definitely update this thread as soon as we make some progress.

I'm creating a GIF in Photoshop from my layers in Illustrator. I hate that I can't figure out a way to keep the Illustrator mask boundaries set in illustrator. Why does the transition not keep the masked information?

Honestly can't believe Adobe haven't even responded to this.

Another day, another project, another set of assets with massive white blank space around them.

Ahh well, back to spending hours fiddling with artboard sizes. This issue gets ignored because it costs developers money I think. Time is money, and Adobe love the idea of people wasting money.

Yes Adobe, you really cannot continue to ignore this. For me it renders the Asset Export tool pretty much redundant. Make it the top priority for the next release, please!
