Improved 3D effects and Adobe Substance materials
We have introduced new and improved '3D and Materials' effects in 26.0 this year. These effects have been fully rebuilt using modern rendering technology and apart from being much more stable than classic 3D effects, they also allow you to:
* Apply and edit 3D effects conveniently through a non-blocking panel with real time preview.
* Texture artwork using Adobe Substance 3D materials that are highly adjustable. Choose from built-in materials in the panel or upload your own.
* Light up artwork with environment and directional light along with shadows.
* Create smooth and curvy extrusions using the new Inflate option.
* Rotate artwork more easily using the new on-canvas controls.
* Once you've setup your 3D object, render it using Ray tracing with adjustable quality options.
There are more features we're actively working on bringing to these effects. Please share your feedback and suggestions from your experience of using these new effects.
There are now several separate requests made, based on the feedback in this thread:
1. Regarding adjustable color and opacity for 3D shadows:
https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657/suggestions/47054086
2. Regarding presets for each tab in 3D and Materials panels: Object, Materials, Lighting:

All those who commented on the topic until October 16, 2023, are already added as voters there. If this is something you want to have for 3D and Materials in Illustrator — please upvote it. If possible — create new requests and bug reports about 3D, rather than commenting here inside. This will help the team to better prioritize efforts on making the feature better. As always — thanks for the feedback! It helps.

I really like the the new 3D effects panel and functionalities but please integrate the perspective tool from the classic Extrude & Bevel panel. For me, it's a quite important feature I'd really miss if there was only the new panel...

We all are very anxious about seemingly raster-driven nature of the feature. Illustrator is vector, right? But in order to embrace Substance this was the bare minimum to introduce first.
Modern 3D won’t abandon vectors, on the contrary, it’s going to be improved in upcoming releases.
This includes better stacking in vector rendering mode (which you can already enable), visibility options to not render hidden faces, mapping (hopefully streamlined). It will support everything that original 3D does (including perspective) and more.Existing 'classic' 3D is not going anywhere. You can still access it and use it.

Hi Ben, despite your your marketing BS I still don't understand why Adobe destroyed a fine working feature like 3D vector mapping. Adobe, please 'overhaul' your texture effects to any other of your pixel based app and re-instate this vector tool. Thanks!

Both perspective and map art missing from new 3d - tool. Makes it totally useless to me.

Mais ou est passé l'option de placage ???

I cannot find a way to make the 3d objects into vectorwork anymore, which is crucial for my production.
Also I wonder where the perspective function has gone. -

Great improvement. it would be awasome that u can transfer the values form one objet to another using differents materiasl or even the same materials in different pieces.

Shadow Control. So far this is great. Love the detail. The on object shadows are good but the cast shadows are harsh. Would like to see a way to better control that.

Good to know that it is working. Can you please share the color settings screenshot so that we can reproduce and look at the issue at our end. -

@Akshay Varshney:
Changing color setting fixed the problem.
Thanks so much!!

Previously requested files we didn't get it. Can you share again also please follow:1. can you please go to Edit-> Color Settings please provide the screenshot of current color settings
2. Change color settings to any other settings and then apply 3D and see if this works. -

As someone who uses Illustrator daily as the vector illustration tool it's supposed to be, I have to say the entire raster based focus of this overhaul seems incredibly worrying.
I'm not saying an effect with Substance materials and proper shading is useless in itself, but this does seem to follow the overall trend of Adobe not improving or fixing core functionalities of their software and making something flashy instead. -

Happy with the updates, especially with the new materials settings, but please consider bringing the track cube, it was much easier and clearer to rotate shapes around using the cube as reference. Right now it's the only thing keeping me from switching to the new tools.
edit: more specifically, being able to see the wireframe while moving an object instead of the current pixelated/low-res preview

The new 3D effect does not respect the "Scale stroke and effects" preference. When scaling an object the depth remains the same (rather than scaling with the object). The bevel does seem to follow when being scaled, but it's hard to tell since the depth isn't changing.

@tom Burns:
1. If you not able to apply 3D on a simple Rectangle also?
2. Does this issue appears every time on your machine? Can you please provide the ai file as well?
3. Please share the Preference folder -

How do we map symbols onto the new 3D objects?
