Hi Everyone,
We have fixed this bug in our latest release – v 24.2.1 which is available worldwide now. Thanks for your patience on this.
Please note that after upgrading you might still see that Align To sets itself to Align to Key Object. If you see this, please manually set the Align To to the required setting, and this reported bug will not happen again. You’ll need to this one time only.
The reason Align To might get set to Key Object after update is because Ai remembers your last Align To on subsequent launches as well. So, if your last Align To was Key Object before quitting/upgrading, after first multi-selection, it will set itself to Key Object. After you manually change it one-time, it will work fine.
You can update to the latest release using Creative Cloud desktop App: https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/creative-cloud-updates.html
An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedAnother problem with the Align that has been going on for a while is the Align Distribute Spacing window has to be open for the input to be active. I use to be able to select objects then open the window and the input was active, now for about a year when I select objects then open the Align Window the input is not active and does not allow for input, causing the user to deselect the object and reselect it to make the input active. I have had this problem on Windows and Mac. Very time consuming for these new problems. It seems like it would be better to go back to older versions of Illustrator to work faster and more efficiently.
An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedI also update to 24.2 and it is automatically performing the last align action used. I prefer for it to use my align preference, Align to Artboard, and only use the key object when I select a key object and revert back to my preferred align setting.

An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedThank you Anonymous from November 11th. Toggling the Show/Hide bounding box (shift + Command +B) works. It brings back my correct preferred unit of measurement of the Align Distribute input field.
An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedTo be more clear all my other input fields show the correct reference measurement px, pt, in. It is only the Align Distribute input field that does not show correctly. The bug is coming from the new document window. Creating a new document and the settings are already what I want I do not need to change anything. This is where the bug comes from. By just pressing return without choosing inches because it is already inches is looking like where the error is coming from. I also opened Illustrator resetting the preferences using Shft + Cntrl + Opt + Cmnd and first creating a new document the Align Distribute field showed only the number and no reference showing "in" for inches. If I change my preferences to, Use legacy "File New" interface, I do not get the bug. Using the normal new document window I have to choose inches even if it is already showing as inches to fix the bug. The bug is entered into my document if I hit the return key to create a new document without choosing inches even if inches is already showing.
An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedI erased the OS for a clean new install of Mojave 10.14.5 and only installed Illustrator 23.0.4 and still the same issue. I am using shortcut keys for the alignments per Actions. For Example I setup F2 Align Top, F3 Align Right, F4 Align Bottom, F5 Align Left, F6 Align Center Left to Right, F7 Align Center Top to Bottom, F8 Align Distribute Left to Right, F9 Align Distribute Top to Bottom. I try to use shortcut keys for everything I can because multiple shortcut key commands can process correctly faster than it takes for the GUI. With the GUI I have to wait for the GUI to process before I can move on the the next action. My system is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) I don't want to buy a new one until they get the keyboard issue fixed. Thanks
An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedThe Align Distribute is using points or pixels instead of my preferred measurement, inches. Sometimes I have to do a save as multiple times before it finally uses my preferred measurement.
An error occurred while saving the comment John commentedAlign Distribute. If I do not have the window open and I select the objects & the key object then open the Align window, the distribute input field does not allow for input. I have to deselect the key object then reselect the key object then it will allow me to enter the input field. Also occasionally if I enter a distribute measurement of 1" or an integer it does not read it as 1", instead it reads it as 0.1 but shows up as 1 until I do a save as not a save. If I do a save it does not fix the problem but if I do a save as then if fixes the error. After saving the file then it shows up in the input field as 0.1 and not 1. It also will not distribute it to the 1" until I do a save as then it will distribute it to 1" and not .1

Please get in touch with us at any of the other support channels – https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html . Since this is not a generic issue that we can reproduce at our end, we will need someone to look into your machine to figure out what is going on here.

Please fix "Align To..." bug or new feature. I never use "Align to Selection" and many times it automatically switches to "Align to Selection" on its own. I always use "Align to Artboard" and I like that it automatically changes to "Align to Key Object" when I select a key object and goes back to my preferred Align to preference "Align to Artboard" when I do not select a key object. Because it is not stay on my preferred "Align to Artboard" and, on its own changes to "Align to Selection" it causes a problem, for example since my preferred alignment is "Align to Artboard" and I'm trying to align multiple objects to the center or elsewhere to the artboard and they are already close to the center but not exact they will not align to the center of the artboard correctly when it on its own it changes to aligning to selection. The fact that it is not aligning to my preferred align to artboard may not be noticeable because the objects may already be close to the center but not exact and therefor causes a major problem with production material and time that is waisted because the objects did not align to my preferred "Align to Artboard". For years the align to... worked the same way and now it does not. The simple solution is for the alignment to stay on the users preferred Align To setting unless a key object is selected then revert back to the users Align To preferred setting not automatically change the users preferred Align To setting.
