I have the same problem and had always had it. I am running the latest AI version (CC 2019) and a print files with just 12 pages on artboards and some 30 linked images are not showing after Illustrator preview crashed. It just shows a grey area at some point as if you've zoomed out big time and pops a message. Then I click on my other file tab to check if it is just a problem with the specific file and it's not. The same thing happens and the preview mode is irreversibly switched to Outline mode.
For the wasted time that the Illustrator, being ran on a Mac, I want a compensation for me and my teammates. 8 passes to your next official conference and a free subscription for 2019. -

Happens to me also. It is very frustrating, especially when I try to resize another object or a text field. Selecting the desired object creates an enlarged Transform Controls frame which includes this locked object (which could also be not locked and does the same)
Illustrator constantly crashes a file that has freeform gradient objects and SVG blur Gaussianblur_7 filter. When it doesn't crash, it does not paste the blurred object properly - it shows no fill. Looking as an empty object.
