Why is there a limit to number of spot/global swatches you can use in a gradient?
We use Illustrator for carpet design which includes complex grades using multiple colours.
As we reference colour poms it is easier to create named colour swatches to keep track of the colours used however we can only apply 27 to a gradient - can this limit be increased?1 vote -
Could you please allow to move the color control pop up menu, when adjusting the gradient point?
Have the option to move the pop up menu to different location. Not right on top of the artwork you're trying to fix?

Incorporate a shortcut inside gradient's panel
I would like to suggest to incorporate the shortcut D for "reset" the 2 initial colors inside the gradient's panel to system standard colors (black and white). I usually use as a last step before finishing my artworks some shadows for a more realistic depth/aspect using black-to-white together with multiply. The D shortcut reset the main stroke and fill colors main swatches, so it would be a little bit faster if the software understands the D as this way while it's working on gradient's setup windows.

Ability to convert Freeform Mesh to Gradient Mesh
The ability to convert a freeform mesh to a gradient mesh is sorely needed. I love creating a gradient with Freefrom Mesh, it's a lot more user friendly but it is a lot more heave on the system, especially when you start having multiple objects. The ability to convert a Freeform Mesh to a Gradient Mesh should be a standard feature. Analysing the colours as it does from an image but creating a more contoured mesh as it does by default with a vector.
Gradient mesh is less heavy on the system and more universally accessible say for exporting as…

alt click swatches to add colors to a selected gradient
With a gradient object selected, it would be much quicker to alt click swatches from the swatch panel to add to current selection
2 votesThis is exactly how it works now — Alt+clicking a swatch applies it to selected gradient stop. Please comment if it’s not what you had in mind.

Different Customizable Shape Gradient Constraints
Much like the flexibility of the radial gradient feature, it would be incredibly helpful to have a similar tool to make gradients, but one that does not constrain you to a circle or ellipse. Yes, AI provides the freeform gradient tool and the gradient mesh tool, but these are often a little finicky and time consuming to use. One can also use the blend tool to attempt a freeform gradient. All of these are far too complicated for creating such simple gradients. I propose that a customizable shape gradient tool is implemented. Like the other gradient tools, one would create…

Mesh Smoothing tool
It would be great if the mesh tool had a smoothing option. Kind of like Maya has the control shift option to smooth out kinks in quads. Especially for photo-real projects. It would be so helpful and time-consuming.

Add Keyboard Shortcut to Switch Gradient Color Stop
Hi
if add a keyboard shortcut to the gradient slider to switch color stops instead of mouse clicks will increase the workflow

Gradient following the curve of a shape
Don't know if this is an original idea but - is it possible to make an feature to make a gradient follow a user-drawn guideline (like with text on line)..? I tried to illustrate it in the attached file - the first shape is the one that should be filled with gradient, the second one is what we can do now (or mesh but that's a bit complicated) and the third one shows the guideline in purple and arrows that the gradient would follow. So the lower left part of the shape would be let's say darkest, the gradient would…
6 votesSince version CS6, Illustrator allows to align gradients on strokes with a dedicated set of Align Stroke buttons in the full expanded Stroke panel.

Automatically make gradients by just selecting two or more colors
Create a default gradient of two or more colors just by selecting them on the artwork or on the swatches panel without having to copy and paste the color codes separately.
156 votesHello all,
This functionality is now available in all the public builds starting V29.0.
To use this functionality, simply select colors from your swatches panel and click on 'create gradient' in the swatch panel options.
Please try out this feature and let us know what you think!

Switching to gradient should use as starting gradient color the original solid color
Switching to solid color to gradient, by default gradient should use as starting color the original solid color.
Since imho mostly people uses solid as starting point, then converts to gradient.

Shear / Skew / Slant / Angle Gradient
Angle Gradient is missing since begging, I know that can be made through the Mesh Tool, but it is not very easy for everyone to make it, there are also other ways to make it but its very difficult. I wrote many basic, essential, and missing features for Illustrator in 2011 in Features Forum web but Adobe has added a few of them, it is very important that every software needs to be filled with basic and essential features, if those are missing then software could not be the best then the rest.

Dragging with Gradient tool over object without a gradient fill does nothing
I have a path I want to be filled with a gradient.
I select it, pick Gradient tool, drag it over the path... and nothing happens.
WHY.
Because AI demands that you apply gradient fill first.
Well, if I'm dragging over the path with a dedicated tool — what else would I want AI to do? Just apply it in the moment I started dragging.12 votes -
Evenly space color stops within a gradient
Being able to distribute color stops inside the gradient panel.
E.g.: I want 32 stops on a single gradient bar.
Being able to evenly distribute them instead of picking a value on click and drag it (as it is really tedious or imprecise).10 votes -
Copy Gradient properties
Sometimes I need to add new objects with gradient fill to my design and keep gradient annotators in the same position as another existing object.
It would be great if a function were added that allowed copying the gradient fill properties from one object to another, keeping the gradient annotators in the same position.
On the other hand, when I add a gradient outline to an object with gradient fill, the gradient annotators do not match between the fill and the outline. This difference is more evident the thicker the contour. Adding the option to keep outline gradient annotators in…13 votes -
Eyedropper tool to have option to pick gradient settings
If you have a gradient set up with custom rotation and you want to pick it to another object with eyedroper tool, the rotation doesn't transfer.
It would save time not having to type it again.
Maybe add some other options as well to have more control.
It should be an option at the eyedropper tool properties. (See image)

Bring Back Hold Shift to Restrict Gradient Movement
In prior versions of Illustrator, when adjusting the composition of a gradient using the Gradient tool, you used to be able to hold Shift to constrict the gradients movement to the Y or X axis.
Please bring this back as it is a quick and seamless way to align the gradient composition exactly instead of eyeballing it.

Make conical gradient
Don't tell me about mesh trick, it has it's limits and surely is not that easy to use.
Just make Conical type gradient from the box.28 votes -
Have a "lock" option for the gradient annotator, to transform objects without affecting gradients
The gradient annotator adjusts itself when you also adjust the object bigger. I would like for there to be an option where I can have the gradient annotator lock in place while I stretch an object bigger. When I am working on a file that has a gradient to the edge of the artboard but has no bleed, this instance is where this option would be super helpful.
